These problems consists of: Problems on the time taken to do a job by certain no. of workers.

. The change in the no. of hours required to do a job if the no. of worker is changed The no. of hours are required to do same job by different workers if their speeds are different etc.

1.

If A can do a piece of work in 10 days, then in 1 day, A will do 1/10th of the total work.

2.

If A is thrice as good as B then, a) In a given amount of time, A will able to do 3 times the work B will do. Ratio of the work done by A and B ( in the same time) = 3:1 b) For the same amount of work, B will take thrice the time as A will. Ratio of the time taken by A and B (same work done)= 1:3
Efficiency is directly proportional to work done and inversely proportional to time taken.

3.

This consists of problems: How long it will take for different pipes of different diameters to fill a cisterns; The time taken to fill a cistern when one pipe is filling it while the other empties it etc.

Type 1# Calculate the time taken by 2 persons working together to finish a work, if time taken individually is given. Example: A can do a piece of work in 10 days which B alone can do in 12 days. In how many days can both do it if they work together

Soln: T = xy/(x+y) where x and y are time taken by A and B individually. T = (10*12)/(10+12) = 120/22 = 5 ( 5/11) days

Type 2# If A and B can finish a work it x days and A alone can do it in y days find the time taken by B alone Example: Two persons A and B working together can dig a trench in 8 hours while A alone can dig it in 12 hours. In how many hours can B alone dig the trench.

Soln: xy/(y-x) where x and y are time taken by A and B individually. T = (12*8)/(12-8) = 96/4 = 24 hrs

Type 3# If one person is m times a good worker and takes one day less than the other person, in how many days both working together can finish the work. Example: A is thrice as good as work man as B and takes 60 days less than B for doing a job. Find the time in which they can do it together.

T = (m*d)/ m -1 = (3*60)/ (9-1) = 180/8 = 45/2 days

( d is the no. of days)

Type 4# If one pipe can fill a tank in t min and another pipe can fill it in t min, if both pipes are opened together, then find the time taken to fill the whole tank. Example: A tap can fill the cistern in 30 min and another can fill the same tank in 40 min. If both are opened simultaneously, find the time when the system will be fulled.

T = (t*t)/(t+t) where t and t are the time taken by pipes alone = (30*40)/(30+40) = 1200/70 = 17 (1/7) min

Type 5# If one pipe can fill a tank in t min and another pipe can empty it in t min, if both pipes are opened together, then find the time taken to fill the whole tank. Example: A cistern is filled in by a pipe A in 10 hr and emptied by a pipe B in 12 hours. If both the pipes are opened, in what time will the cistern be full.

T = (t*t)/(t- t) where t and t are the time taken by pipes alone = (10*12)/(12-10) = 120/2 = 60 min

Type 6# A cistern takes t min to fill by the fill in pipes but takes extra min to fill in due to a leak in a cistern. Find out the time which the leak will take to empty this cistern. Example: A pipe can fill in a cistern in 16 hours due to a leakage in the bottom, 4 hrs extra are required for the cistern to be filled up. If the cistern is full, in what time will the leak empty it?

Soln: (1/ t) (1/t) = 1/(t + x) (1/t) = (1/ t) 1/(t + x) = x/t(t + x) t = 16*(( 4+16)/4) = 80 hrs
