OPTIMAL POWER FLOW WITH WIND AND

SOLAR ENERGY
Mukul Kumar
EE 5230: Power System Operations
Fall 2013
Main objective of the OPF problem is to determine the
optimal steady-state operation of an electric power
system while satisfying engineering and economic
constraints.
The objective function can be generation cost
minimization, real or reactive power loss minimization,
reactive power reserve maximization, security margin
index maximization, emission index minimization

under generation constraints, transformer constraints, shunt Var
constraints, security constraints
Incorporating Wind Power

Genetic algorithm is used
as optimization technique

IEEE 30 bus test system is used for simulation
50 MW (DFIG) wind farm and 15 MW solar
Photovoltaic system are integrated to this system
Unbiased truncated normal distribution and truncated
normal distribution is used for values of forecasting
error for wind and solar forecast respectively.

Results

** accounting DFIG Integration at BUS 7
*Bus 7 is selected for DFIG integration based on the least cost
^Bus 30 is selected for PV system integration based on the least cost
All the data except cost is in per unit
