Algorithmic Vertical Handoff Decision and Merit Network Selection
across Heterogeneous Wireless Networks by Sunisa gunarak and
Raungrong suleesathira, WSEAS Transaction on
Communication,Issue 1,Vol 12 January 2013.

It explains the multiple metrics for handoff to permit connectivity
across UMTS and WiMAX/ WLAN. But the considered metrics for
handoff initiation include the predicted received signal strength of
neighbourn network

A QOS oriented vertical handoff scheme for Wimax/WLAN overlay
network by Dong Ma and Maoda Ma ,IEEE transactions on parallel
and Distributed systems April 2012.

It explains the internetworking architecture of WiMAX and WLAN
and also architecture based proactive vertical handoff, but it depend
on network condition and applications.

overlays with preferences: Approximation Algorithms for matching
with preference list by Giorgos georgiadis and marina
papatriantafilou IEEE 2010/978-1-4244-6443/10.

It employ the use of node satisfaction to move beyond classic stable
matchings and toward the overlay context and total satisfaction
achieved by approximation of possible connection in overlay.

Avoidance algorithm for Vertical Handoff in Wireless overlay
Network-IEEE 1-4244-0264-6/ 2007

Proposed algorithm effectively alleviating the unnecessary vertical
handover between 3G cellular and WLAN hotspots and compute
threshold value based on received signal strength Which is non
linear .
Overhead in vertical handoff is high due to different network posses
different system architecture, bandwidth, latency and capacity
Due to the inconsistent Characteristics of wireless communication
environment, Received signal strength to MT cannot be linear,in such
cases VHO is not executed properly.
Interoprability problems between advance cellular network like
E-UTRAN and exist WiMAX/WLAN not investigated.

Proposed algorithm provide best Qos oriented vertical hand off
scheme for E-UTRA and WiMAX /WLAN overlay networks.

Investigate several important issues for the interoperability of
E-UTRAN and WiMAX/WLAN networks.

To determine time at which terminal should initiate a handoff in
heterogeneous overlay network.

Packet multicasting technique used to prevent packet loss during
handoff.
It provide dynamic many -to-many connectivity between set of
senders and group of receivers.

A wireless overlay network is a virtual network of nodes
and logical links that is built on top of existing network

For routing
For security
For addressing
For multicast
For mobility

Process of maintaining active connection to mobile nodes

Horizontal handoff
- occur in same network(homogeneous network)

Vertical hand off
-occur between different network(heterogeneous network)

E-UTRAN- Evolved universal terrestrial radio network

E-UTRA is the air interface of 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE)
upgrade path for mobile network.

It provides higher data rates, lower latency and is optimized
for packet data.

It uses OFDMA radio-access for the downlink and SC-
FDMA on the uplink.
