Location

• With an area of about 144,000 sq km, Bangladesh is situated


between latitudes 20~34' and 26~38' north and latitudes 88~01' and
92~41' east.
• The country is bordered by India on the east, west and north and by
the Bay of Bengal on the south. There is also a small strip of
frontier with Burma on the southeastern edge.
Language Movement, 1952
• The people of Bangladesh discovered their identity
through the Language Movement in 1952.

Independence
• Due to the heroic resistance and supreme sacrifices of the valiant freedom
fighters Bangladesh became an independent sovereign state on 16th
December, 1971.
People and Population
• Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated areas
of the world. The present population is about
131,269,860 which makes it the eighth populous country
of the world.

• The overall density was 890 persons per sq km (2,304


persons per sq mi) in 2001.

classified as urban in

Education
• The literacy rate in Bangladesh is very low(44.3%), with
significant disparity between female and male literacy
rates.
• The education system is broken down into 4 levels,
primary from grades 1 to 5, secondary from grades 6 to
10, higher secondary from grades 11 to 12, and tertiary.

Bangladesh is country of rivers.
• Bangladesh has one of the largest networks in the
world with a total number of about 700 rivers
including tributaries, which have a total length of
about 24,140 km.

• Bangladesh has predominantly four major river


systems - (1) the Brahmaputra-Jamuna, (2) the
Ganges-Padma, (3) the Surma-Meghna, and (4)
the Chittagong Region river system.
• The watercourses of the
country are obviously not
evenly distributed. They
increase in numbers and
size from the north-west of
the northern region to the
south-west of southern
region.

• In some places, such as


Patuakhali, Barisal and
Sundarbans area the
watercourses are so
plentiful that they form a
veritable maze.
Flora and Fauna
Abundance of Bangladesh's bird life makes it an Doyel
ornithologist's paradise. Of the 525 recorded species, 350
are resident.
Of the 200 species of mammals, the pride of place goes to
the Royal Bengal Tiger of the Sunderbans, the largest
block of littoral forests spreading over an area of 6,000 sq.
km.
The forest cover of Bangladesh is only about 9 percent.

Agriculture
• Bangladesh is primarily an
agrarian economy. With some
three-fifths of the population
engaged in farming.

• The total cultivable area


of Bangladesh is around
24 million acres and there
are over 17.5 million
cultivators.

• Bangladesh is blessed with a
vast aquatic resources and
offers suitable climatic
conditions for growing fish and
other aquatic organisms of
economic importance.

Fish and shellfish production has


increased from 0.6million metric ton
in ‘80 to over 2 million metric ton in
2005. Bangladesh is now ranked 7th
in total fish production in the world,
and has become one of the top 5th
exporters of aquatic products with an
export value over 300 million US$.
Industry
• Jute Industry has traditionally played an important role in the
national economy. But in recent years, Ready Made
Garments Industry has replaced Jute as the principal export-
earner for the country. Considerable progress has been
attained in the past few years in industries such as leather,
ceramic, shrimp, fish, pharmaceuticals and frozen food.

Bangladesh has a target of


‘Vision 2021’ to be developed
as a ‘Digital’ country within 2021
which includes specialization and
widespread use of Internet, Digital
Technology and Computation
throughout the whole country in
all the fields like agriculture,
education, manufacturing,
Governance etc.

Information Technology
The size of the IT industry is estimated at
around USD 150 million which is growing
at more than 20% each year.
Major Achevements:
– National Voter Database and computerized ID
of 60 million people
– Computerized system for Bangladesh Railway
for 1 million passengers each month
– National Data Bank
– Vehicle Registration system dealing one million
registrations or renewals per annum.
– Automation of National pre-university
examination system.
IT Industry
• IT Education currently produces 10000 IT
professionals each year
• Human resources for the IT industry have
been growing rapidly since the govt.
declared this industry as a thrust sector
and has embarked on a mission to make
the industry a substantial part of the USD
36 Billion economy

– More than 300,000 IT professionals are
engaged in the industry
– 26 universities offer undergraduate and
graduate degrees in computer science
and engineering
– More than 1000 private and public sector
computer-training institutes offer IT skill
development of various levels.
