Flexural Modulus
Or modulus of elasticity in
bending
is a measure of how a certain
material will strain and
potentially even deform when
weight or force is applied to it
E(flex)= (L^3)m/4b(h^3)
Dynamic Modulus
is the ratio of stress to strain
under vibratory conditions (calculated
from data obtained from either free or
forced vibration tests, in shear,
compression, or elongation). It is a
property of viscoelastic materials
Edyn = Cl(f^2)
C is CONSTANT
I the moment of inertia
f the frequency of vibration

Viscoelastic
Deformation
Viscoelasticity
is the property of materials that exhibit
both viscous and elastic characteristics when
undergoing deformation
Viscous materials, like honey, resist shear
flow and strain linearly with time when a stress is
applied
Elastic materials strain when stretched and
quickly return to their original state once the
stress is removed

Elastomeric Deformation
Elastomer
Polymers with a
pronounced rubbery
region
What makes elastomers
special is that they can
be stretched to many
times their original
length, and can bounce
back into their original
shape without
permanent
deformation

Creep Deformation
Creep
sometimes called cold flow
is the tendency of a solid material to move slowly
or deform permanently under the influence of
mechanical stresses
result of long-term exposure to high levels of
stress that are still below the yield strength of
the material
Stages of creep
-initial stage or primary
creep -> the strain rate is
relatively high, but slows with
increasing time. This is due
to work hardening
-secondary or steady-state
creep -> the strain rate
eventually reaches a minimum
and becomes near constant.
This is due to the balance
between work hardening
and annealing (thermal
softening)
- tertiary creep -> the strain
rate exponentially increases
with stress because
of necking phenomena

Stress Relaxation
Stress
relaxation describes
how polymers
relieve stress under
constant strain.
Because they are
viscoelastic, polymers
behave in
a nonlinear, fashion.
This nonlinearity is
described by both
stress relaxation and a
phenomenon known
as creep, which
describes how
polymers strain under
constant stress
