egg chickens and the benefit of raising this type of
chicken.

DIFFERENT BETWEEN VILLAGE CHICKEN AND EGG
LAYING CHICKEN
Village chickens can be raised around the house and
fed very low cost feed such as spare cooked rice, curry,
cracked rice, rice bran, and free feed such as insects,
worms, wild plants, etc.
Village chicken can be sold for cooking and some cocks
will be used for cock fighting.
Egg laying chicken can be raised in metal cages,
bamboo cages, in a closed chicken coop, and bigger
chicken coops with free outdoor space.
Egg laying chickens produce eggs every day so most
people use eggs for sale and additional nutrition for the
family.
Most egg laying chickens do not need a cock to help in
their egg production.

NUTRITION FROM CHICKEN EGGS

Rich in nutrition.
Include many vitamins, minerals and proteins that
the human body needs
Only 76 calories per egg
Egg white has over 50% protein
Egg yolk has protein, fat, minerals such as
Phosphorus, Iron, Zinc, Calcium and Selenium,
Vitamins include Vitamins A, B1(thiamine), B2
(Riboflavin), B6, B12, D, Folic acid, Panthothenic
acid, and Choline.
Also includes Carotenoid, Lutein and Zeaxanthin.

FOLLOW UP QUESTION (1)
How many calories in one egg?
What kinds of vitamins are include in chicken egg?
What are the differences between village chicken
and egg laying chicken?
Where can we raise egg laying chicken ?
Why are chickens eggs good for health?

CHICKEN COOP CONSTRUCTION FOR 20
CHICKENS
Try to build 50 meter apart from well and houses
Length =4 meters, width=2 meters, and high=5-6
meters and free space for running outside (for 20
chickens)
Try to find free and cheap materials to build the
coop
Use thatch or plastic cover or old roof
Try to build strong coop
Design the coop size for more than 20 chickens
To increase egg-laying, if possible use an electric
light over the middle of the coop. This should be left
switched on start from 6pm to 7am.
FILLERS MATERIALS
Use rice husk for chicken bedding. Rice husk is the
best choice for filler.
By using rice husk, it will control the smell and mix
with the chicken manure and turn into a very rich
compost.
Chickens also like playing with rice husk to make
them happy.
Rice husk is cheap but should be changed very 6
months
Rice husk will make the chicken coop dry and keep
the chickens healthier.
BANANA PLANTING

Background
The banana stalk is one of the main ingredient for feeding the chickens in
this project.
Gluay Nam Wahhas the largest stalk among common banana plants,
good choice for planting
Having 10 adult trees = enough food for 20 chickens over 6 months
Having 30 adult trees = enough food for 20 chickens over 18 months
Planning
If flat land and space available, plant 3 meters apart in rows, with 1 meter
between each row
If sloping land and space available plant in areas close to water sources
like ponds, water runoff, streams
If space is a challenge:
Be creative when you place the plant
Think about using small spaces for a good reason
Banana planted naturally grow in a circle. Try planting some banana trees
around a wet area, and place compost/leftover food waste in the middle of
the circle. The compost pile absorbs water and provides nutrients for the
banana trees
It is recommended to begin planting at the beginning of rainy season
FOLLOW UP QUESTIONS

What kind of banana should we plant for chicken
feed?
How many banana plants do we need to grow in
order to make chicken feed for 6 months?
How much space should we leave between each
banana plant?
Which place is best to grow banana plants?
Which season is the best to start growing banana
plants?

How far do we need to build chicken coop from well
and house?
What is the ideal length, width and height for
building a chicken coop for 20 chickens?
What kind of material do you use for filling the
chicken coop?
Why do we use rice husk for filling chicken coop?
MAKING CHICKEN FEED INSTRUCTION

This will make 80kg of feed which is enough to feed 20
chickens for one month
Collect the chicken feed ingredients from above chart.
Equipment needed: knives, used rice husk bags, 100
liters capacity plastic bins, chopping board
Chop 20 kg of banana stalk into small pieces and place
on the used rice husk bags
Mix 18kg of rice bran, 1kg cracked rice, 40kg of store
feed, 1kg of sugar and 0.4kg of salt on top of used rice
husk bags with the chopped banana stalk.
Mix everything by using hand or shovel.
Put the mixture into the plastic bin and cover it for 5
days.
Finally, you can use it to feed your chicken according to
the feed plan overleaf.

FEED PLAN FOR EGG LAYING CHICKENS
Each chicken needs 133gr of feed per day (total per
day of 2.66 kg for 20 chickens)
Feed 50% of the daily amount in the morning and
50% in the evening.
Make sure there is enough clean water at all times.
Feed Egg Shell every time for additional calcium
treatment.
Feed some insect or additional vegetables or
beans.

FOLLOW UP QUESTION (3)
What kind of materials do you need to make your
chicken feed?
How many kilogram of each ingredient do you need ?
Where can you find these ingredients?
How many days you need to wait for your chicken feed
after making?
How much food do you need to feed your chickens per
day?
Why do we need to feed egg shell?
Is drinking water important to chicken?
Do we need to feed chicken more than these quantities?

DAILY ROUTINE AND HEALTH CHECK

Check daily for chickens which are sick, thin, injured,
dead or losing feathers.
Teacher or students need to check eggs, feed, drinking
water everyday.
For safety, use gloves and boot to prevent disease or
bacteria.
IMO or EM is the best choice to defeat the disease and
other bad insects that will happen in the coop.
Spray bedding with EM or IMO 2 spoons and dilute in
10L of water and spray 2 times per week.
Sometimes, mix EM or IMO in the drinking water when
we see the chicken are feeling sick.
In addition, you can spray any time when the smell is
getting bad.

chicken?
