Slide 3

Dredging means transporting

Dredging is the maritime transportation of
natural materials from one part of the water
environment to another
by specialised dredging vessels.
Dredging vessels transport
Sand
Rock
Gravel
Silt

European Dredging Association 2010

Slide 4

Dredging vessels support:

Port infrastructure development,
Land reclamation for commerce,

Land reclamation for residences,

Land reclamation for recreation,
Without dredging no
harbours, no ports, no
access channels.
Ultimately it means no
economic development
and no global trade.

Around 80% of the

largest population
centres in the
world are found in
coastal areas

Industry perspective

European Dredging Association 2010

Slide 11

Large-scale Dredging Projects

Continuous growth of market for hydraulic
infrastructure.
Sustainable development increasingly important for
clients and stakeholders.
Uncertainties on project impacts, extensive EMPs
and monitoring requirements (false securities).
Long-lasting procedures and complexity of
environmental legislation (European Directives
National Laws).
Development of large-scale projects characterised by
uncertainties and delays (even cancellation).
European Dredging Association 2010
Slide 12

Environmentally Sensitive Projects

Defensive: Focus on mitigating negative effects.
Environmental requirements cannot be simply
copied from one site to another.
Specialist role (knowledge) shifts from client to
contracting parties.
Thorough knowledge of ecosystem processes makes
the difference on environmentally complex projects;
however scientifically-sound ecosystem knowledge
still missing and needed.
The conditions are right for a new approach !
European Dredging Association 2010
Slide 13

Building with Nature offers opportunites to

reinforce competitive edge while at the same
time developing natures potential,
truly contributing to Sustainable Development.

Slide 15

Idea of Building with Nature

Idea exists for many years
Inspired by the ideas of J.N. Svasek,
Prof. Ronald Waterman developed for over 30
years the concept into
Integrated Coastal Policy through Building
with Nature (1980-2008).

Slide 16

Building with Nature and Industry

The European dredging industry is
fully convinced and supports initiatives such as:

ECOSHAPE, Building with Nature:

Dutch interdisciplinary initiative.
PIANC Working with nature.
European Dredging Association 2010
Slide 17

Concept of Building with Nature

Concept is
Flexible integration
of land in sea
and of water in the new land
making use of materials and forces/interactions,
present in nature, taking into account existing
and potential nature values and the biogeomorphology & geo-hydrology of coast and
seabed.
European Dredging Association 2010
Slide 18

Reality of Building with Nature

Ecodynamic design where
the dynamics of the natural system become the starting
point for design and realisation of hydraulic
infrastructures, in a true interdisciplinary approach
(integrating Engineering, Ecology & Governance)
From defensive approach, minimising environmental
impact, (environment = constraint)

To offensive approach, optimising full (socio-)

economic and environmental potential.
(environment = opportunity)

Key elements of BwN programme

Nature as starting point for design (in context of
economic & infrastructural demands)
Collaboration of engineers, ecologists and governance
experts
Focus on practice: Real-world cases
Direct stakeholder involvement (Public authorities,
Port of Rotterdam, PUMA, NGOs, society, )

Slide 27

BwN Programme objectives:

1. Develop ecosystem knowledge enabling Building
with Nature (BwN)
2. Establish how to bring the BwN-concept forward in
society and make it happen
3. Develop scientifically sound design rules and norms
4. Develop expertise to apply the BwN-concept
5. Make the concept tangible using practical BwNexamples
