HISTORY & BACKGROUND:
• The origin of the Opium poppy goes back to the
pre historic times. The narcotics and the sleep
producing qualities of the poppy have been
known to human kind through out recorded
history.
• It is said that poppy originated in the
Mesopotamia about 6000 years ago, and was
referred as “The plant of joy” and it was an
medicinal tablet.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND:
• The use of the opium was then passed on to the
“Greeks”, “The Egyptians” and “The Turks”.

• The Greeks derived the name of the opium as the


word “POPPAS” meaning “JUICE”.

• The Greek physicians, used poppy in the treatment of


verity of medical problems such as the snake bites,
asthma, epilepsy and colic.
HISTORY & BACKGROUND:
• The Romans probably learned about the Opium
during their conquest of the eastern
Mediterranean.
• In the end of the 19th century various
undesirables, such as Gamblers, Opiates and
Narcotics became identified more with the so
called criminal elements then with medical
therapy.
• In the beginning of the 20th century, narcotic
use had became a world wide problem.

PAKISTAN
DRUG CULTURE IN PAKISTAN:
• Poppy and Opium have been cultivated in
Northern parts of Pakistan for centuries.
• Heroin, as a drug of use, was virtually
unknown in Pakistan prior to 1979, sinse
then Heroin addiction has reahed
epidemic proportions and has effected
nearly all social economic groups.
QURANIC SAYINGS AGAINST
THE DRUG ADDICTION
Heroin, Opium and Hashish have been
widely used with out extreme
devaluation in Muslim society, although
the Quran forbid the use of substances
that alter the states of consciousness.
The word used for intoxicant in Quran is
“KHUMAR” which in literal sense means
wine or alcohol extracted from grapes.
Allah almighty ordains in
the Holy Quran:
• “O Ye who believe, intoxicants and
games of chance and idols and disc
inning arrows are only infamy of
Satan’s handiwork. So, leave it aside
in order that you may succeed. Satan
seekth only to cast among you enmity
and hatred by means of intoxicants
and games of the chance, and to turn
you away from the remembrance of
Allah, and from prayers. Will you them
In other verses of the Holy Quran, man
is again warned that he has more to
lose and less to gain from the use of
intoxicants.

The Holy Quran says:


“They question thee about strong drink
and game of chance say in both is great
sin, and (some) utility for men, but the
sin of them is greater than there
usefulness”
(Chapter:11: Verse 219)

EFFECTS OF THE DRUG
ABUSE:
• The problem of the drug abuse,
particularly Heroin addiction is
of grave concern, no doubt. The
statistics speak out it, it is a
problem of wider magnitude,
deeper intensity and varied and
multiple dimensions.
EFFECTS OF THE DRUG
ABUSE:
• It has serious amplification for the
health and happiness of the individual.
• It has for reaching impacts on the
economy, society, politics and even
on international relations.
• The growth and development of the
family is blocked.
• The social environment of the
community is adversely effected.
CAUSES OF THE DRUG
ABUSE
• The causes of the drug abuse and
drug addiction are wide and varied.
There are many reasons for the drug
abuse and drug addiction. A few of
them may be as follows.
• For peace of mind.
• Because of tragic experience.
• Un-employment.

• For fun / to seek pleasure.
• Because of bad company.
• Curiosity.
• Easy availability.
• To relieve body pain.
• Drug using peers.
• Drug using family members.
• Poor relationship with parents.
• To forget worries.

• Lack of responsibility.
• Intra familial stress.
• Enhancement of work performance.
• Enhancement of sex performance.
• Rebellious attitude.
• Social stress.
• Lack of medical facility.

• Several sources of positive and negative
reinforcement for drug use have been
identified (CAHOON & CROSBY 1972) and
the views by various other psychologists.
• Positive reinforcement based on social
factors such as attention and the attention
by the peer group.
• Positive reinforcement based on the
physiological effects of the drugs such as
euphoria, relaxation, or the “RUSH” from
the stronger drugs.

• Negative reinforcement due to the
reduction of unpleasant emotions,
anxiety, depression, guilt etc caused
by stressful or boring environment.
• Negative reinforcement due to the
reduction and elimination of
unpleasant physiological such a pain
or withdrawl symptoms in those who
are physically addicted to a drug.
CONCLUSIONS
CONCLUSION
• The present research was planned
and conducted to find out facts about
drug addiction specifically heroin
addiction problem in Pakistani
Society, included the sample of this
study. The data acquired have been
analyzed and following conclusions
have been drawn regarding heroin
addicts, its causes and
consequences.
CONCLUSIONS
• It is found that majority of the drug
addiction belongs to age group of
below 30 years.
• Initially it causes health problems like
coughing, decreased body fitness, risk
of cardiovascular diseases, and
decreased lungs growth and function.
• It is found that majority of the
respondents were literate.
CONCLUSIONS
• It is found that majority of the respondents
parents were illiterate.
• It was also found that that majority of the
respondents have the personnel income
between the 3000 to 6000 rupees per
month.
• It is found that majority of the respondents
did not observe religious injections and had
no religious education.
• It is found that majority of the respondents
have more then average friends (four or
more).
CONCLUSIONS

• It is found that majority of the


respondents spend 100-150
rupees daily on the drugs.
