Jose Maceda

(1917 – 2004) National Artist for Music

- Born: January 17, 1917 – Manila - He started his music studies at the academy of Music in Manila. - He went to Paris to study. - He eventually pursued advanced studies in USA and earned a Doctorate Degree in Ethnomusicology from UCLA.

Musical Style changed when he encountered the music of indigenous tribes of mindoro in 1953. he then embarked on his life’s work, dedicated to the understanding and preservation of filipino traditional music.

Maceda combined sounds of the environment with ethnic music.

Lucrecia KAsilag

(1918 - 2008) National Artist for Music

-Born: August 31, 1918, San Fernando, La Union -She went to Manila to pursue a degree in music at the Philippine Women’s University. -She obtained her master’s degree from Eastman School of Music in New York, USA.

-Kasilag’s compositions demonstrated a fusion of Eastern and Western styles in using instruments, melody, harmony and rhythm. -She is particularly known for incorporating indigenous Filipino instruments into orchestral productions.

-Former Dean of the College of Music and Fine Arts, PWU -President and Music Director of the Bayanihan Dance Company. -Chairman of the asian Composer’s League and the League of Filipino Composers

(1941 - ) National Artist for Music

- Born: February 25, 1941, Pasig - He completed his Bachelor of Music degree at the College of Music, UP. - He finished his Master of Music degree at Indiana University, USA. - He received his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Composition at the State University of New York, USA.

-He had also pursued his graduate studies in Ethnomusicology at the University of Illinois, USA. -His compositional style features chromaticism, music seria, and electronic components, combined with indigenous Philippines

Fr. Manuel Maramba, OSB (1936 - )

- Born: July 4, 1936 in Pangasinan -Age 11: he gave his first public performance at the Bamboo Organ in Las Pinas. -Age 14: He became the official accompanist of the Las Pinas Boys Choir

- He was the youngest finalist to participate in the National Music Competition for Young Artists (NAMCYA) piano competition in 1978. - After high School: he was sent on full scholarship to the University for Music and Performing Arts in Graz, Austria.

-Finished his Bachelor of Music Degree Major in Piano at the Conservatory of Music, UST.

-He earned with distinction the degree of Master of Arts In Church Music. -Teacher’s Certificate in Organ -Age 19: he performed at Carnegie Hall.

-He received a Master’s Degree of Musical Arts in Performance from Yale Unversity’s School of Music, USA. -He also studied sacred music at the Kirchenmusikschule in Regensburg, Germany.

Jerry DadaP (1935 - )

-Born: November 5, 1935 in Hinunangan, Southern Leyte -The first filipino composer to conduct his own works at the Carnegie Recital Hall in New York.

-He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Music, major in Composition at the Conservatory of Music, UP in 964. -1968 – went to the USA on a study-observation grant from the Music Promotion Foundation of the Philippines.

-He received a full scholarship grant from the United Presbyterian

Church of USA from 1969-


-He obtained his Postgraduate Diploma in Composition at the Mannes College of Music in New York, USA.

- 1971: He taught composition, ear training, and orchestration at the Sta. Isabel College of Music in Manila.

Francisco F. Feliciano (1942 – 2014)

-Born: February 19, 1942, in Morong, Rizal - Avant garde composer and conductor for band and chorus. -first exposure to music was with the MORRIZ BAND, a brass band established and owned by his father.

-High School: he played the cymbals and clarinet -He obtained his Teacher’s Diploma in Composition and Conducting at the Conservatory of Music, UP in 1964. -Bachelor of Music degree major in composition in


-Master in Music Composition – UP -Diploma in Music Composition – Berlin, Germany -Master of Musical Arts and Doctorate in Music Composition – Yale University School of Music.

- Choir conductor and instructor in music fundamentals at St. Andrews Seminary in Quezon City. -Instructor at UP Conservatory of Music and Conductor of the UP Symphony Orchestra.

JONAS BAES (1961 - )

-Born: 1961, Los Banos, Laguna -Studied at the College of Music, UP in 1977 -he researched on the music of Iraya-Mangyan people of Mindoro, which later became the inspiration for his compositions.

-1992-1994: he studied in Freiburg, Germany. -He is known for writing music utilizing unorthodox musical instruments.
