William Smith

the time his map was first published he
was overlooked by the scientific
community; his relatively humble
education and family connections
prevented him from mixing easily in
learned society. Consequently, his work
was plagiarised; financially ruined, he
spent time indebtors' prison. It was
only much later in his life that Smith
received recognition for his
accomplishments, and became known
as the "Father of EnglishGeology".

Richter is most famous as the creator
of theRichter magnitude scale, which,
until the development of the
moment magnitude scalein 1979,
quantified the size ofearthquakes.
Inspired byKiyoo Wadati's 1928 paper
on shallow and deep earthquakes,
Richter first used the scale in 1935
after developing it in collaboration with
Beno Gutenberg; both worked at the
California Institute of Technology.
