Introduction
Bryophytes are small terristrial plants that grow closely
packed together in mats or cushions on a variety of
substances. Bryophytes are often the first plants to colonise
newly exposed grounds, bare grounds and together abiotic
surfaces.. Bryophytes are sensitive to small variation in the
environmental conditions and as such provide a good
material for experimental studies.
Allelopathy is derived from two Greek words alleon means
each other and pathos means to suffer, i.e. the injurious
effect of one after another. Allelochemicals produced by a
plant escape into the environmental and subsequently
influence the growth and development of other neighboring
plants, Lantana has allelopathic effect against agoromic
crops and Lantana camara Linn. ranks as one of the top ten
worst weeds in the world (Halim & Herberger, 1977) My work
is an attempt to study the allelopathic effect of Lantana
Camara, some physical factors and chemical compounds of
both nutreitive and hormonal nature on regeneration of
Riccia gangetica.

Material and Methods

Step
1

Fresh root, stem and leaves of Lantana camara were dried in an oven at
80C for 24 hours.

Step
2

10gm of each dried plant parts were soaked in 100ml distilled water for
24 hours and filtered.

Step Extract was diluted with half knops liquid culture medium (HKM)
3
Step Required percentage of extract + HKM was prepared.
4
Step HKM served as control
5
Step
6

Explants of Riccia gangetica were sterilized with 2% solution of calcium

hypochlorite.

Step
7

10/5 explant of optical , middle and basal part of thalles were land in
petri dish.

Step
8

Explant inoculated petri dishes were kept in BOD incubater in

fluorescent tube light for proper climate condition at 22 2C

Observation
Observation of regeneration experiment were recorded at 10 days
internal and were run for more then 30 days.

Result and Discussion

Observation recorded maximum regeneration in control

medium.
Apical explant showed greater regeneration potentially and was
observed up to (47.61%) concentration of Lantana root extract
this followed by middle witch exhibited moderate regeneration
(39.99%)least was observed with basal explant (25.71%)
Table 1, 2, 3
It is evident from the data shown in table 1,2,3 that
regeneration percentage is directly proportional to the time
period (no. of days) and inversely proportional to the
concentration of allelochemicals present in the various extract
of Lantana. This may be due to the degradation of the extract.
The highest regeneration was recorded in control (80.00%) the
mean value for regeneration percentage was maximum for root
(47.61%) followed by stem (32j.32%) and leaf extract (22.85%)

Conclusion
1. Increase in concentration resulted in
respective decrease of regeneration
process.
2. Inhibition effect was high in leaf extract
followed by steam and root extract.
3. Phytochemically the extract has been
formed to certain phenols and alkaloids
that seems to act as toxic substance.
4. The extract is heat stable as indicate
by the fact that the regeneration was
obtained after autoclaving.
5. The probable reason may be the
presence
of
higher
number
of
trichomes and higher concentration of
allelochemicals on the leaf surface of
Lantana as compare to stem and root.
6. Thus Riccia gangetica, known to be
very common in moist and shady
places, has particularly disappeared,
from the places where Lantana camara
now grows densely. Unchecked growth
of this shrub is bound to adversely
affect the survival of spread of
bryophytes in this region.
