When Students Wants To Be Masters

WHERE?
Koraput, Orissa
WHO?
Students of Nandapur High School who belong to poor Gadaba and Paroja tribal communities and
others from Harijan society.
WHAT?
Students of this school are given stipend of Rs. 150 every month by the Welfare Department as they
belong to very poor background. There are 22 students in the school.
Parents arrive the same day as stipend arrives at school, so that they can borrow money from their
children.
The region goes low (sometimes 2 degree Celsius) with the temperature during winter. These students
dont have proper clothes to escape from the chilled nights and they sleep on gunny sacks which comes
from their parents farms.
The children are sharing only two rooms one of which has a 100 watt bulb and the other one, a low
power bulb.
They are given meal twice a day because the students need to attend their classes also.
Despite of all these, the school is not called ordinary. The students are determined to gain education and
even their parents are wanting education for their children.
Six out of twenty-two students wants to be teachers because they know that there are not enough
masters in their region. Children of this region wants to attend school and gain knowledge. So these six
students wants to give a residential school for the poor students of the region to gain knowledge.
WHY?
It is only the Welfare Department who is looking after and funding the school.
There is no electricity.
The rice used for eating is also only available when they bring it from their villages which is within
twenty-five kilometre radius.
HOW?
Students of the Nandapur High School are given stipend of Rs.150 each month by the Welfare Dept.
There are students who have studied under low light candles and bulbs. They have also come up
with graduate and post graduate degrees, and some even opted for M. Phil and Ph.D.
The students ranging from 10-15 years, prepare their own food.
The literacy rate of this region is less than 19% and the female literacy rate is only 8%.
The students of this region also wants a good life towards which they are working even in the worst
condition, This shows their determination. These students also said that in near future they would
like to lead their lives as teachers and give other poor students a ray of hope with the light of
education.
