Defining the
Problem

The
Problem

- Mud has accumulated around

the Bradish Johnson House
-

Slippery and dirty

Unsafe/hazard

Not aesthetically pleasing

Overall nuisance to the students

and faculty of McGehee

Pictures of the Mud

Area

(7)

Why is the mud

accumulating in one
spot only?
Maintenance work over the last 6 months
has led to backup of dirt in the area as
well as sunken land due to machinery
traveling across the area.
The first street gate has been in use by
students/faculty for 6 years; excessive
walking on the area has caused the
ground to wear.

Have there been

previous attempts to
solve the mud problem
in the past?
Seeds were placed after maintenance
work, but the rain washed them away, so
grass was not able to grow.
Gravel has been placed in this area in the
past, but the maintenance over the
summer diminished this.
Attempts to plant grass havent worked
because this area is very shady (BJ House
blocks morning sun, Oak Tree blocks
afternoon sun).

We surveyed the McGehee community (including students

from grades 8-12, teachers, and administrators) about their
perception of the mud problem and how they thought we
should fix it.

paved walkway
Includes labor, materials, and leveling
the ground with gravel
$0.60 per square foot of sod x 2,500 square
feet = $1,500 (4)
Includes professional installation

Timeframe:
About 3-5 days

= $3,900.00

Pros:
Very safe
Prevents mud on shoes, clothes, etc.
Aesthetically pleasing

Cons:

Solution #2

Stone Walkway, Grass, and

Gravel

$290.25

Cheaper

$350 per 200 sq ft for gravel = $420 (3)

Prevents mud from getting on shoes,

clothing, etc.

Includes professional installation

$0.60 per square foot of sod x 2,500 square
feet = $1,500 (4)
Includes professional installation

Timeframe:
About 2-3 days

= $2,210.25

Aesthetically pleasing
Takes less time to implement

Cons:
People are more likely to trip
Foot traffic

Conclusions

88%

Of people in the McGehee community agree that the mud is a big problem on
campus.

Conclusion

Any solution must include grass in order to be effective.

Grass is aesthetically pleasing and keeps the historic integrity of the school.
Grass will hold the ground in place, thus preventing mud from happening.

Even though the paved walkway is a safer option, the stone walkway
would be more cost effective.
JAVELCA & Co. believes the paved walkway would be the best solution.

Given the safety concerns associated with this problem, it should be

addressed in a timely manner.

Thanks to Mr. Dave, Ms. Pigman, and Ms. G from JAVELCA
& Co. for helping us uncover the past issues with this area
of campus and what has led to the situation we are
experiencing now.
