INTRODUCTION:
 Interlocking concrete paving blocks (ICPB) has been extensively used in a
number of countries for quite sometime as a specialized problem solving
technique for providing pavement in areas where conventional types of
construction are less durable due to many operational and environmental
constrains . Interlocking concrete paving block technology has been
introduced in India in construction, a decade ago, for specific requirement
viz.Foothpaths ,parking areas, gardens, etc. But now being adopted extensively
in different uses where the conventional construction of using hot bituminous
mix or cement concrete technology is not feasible or desirable.
 Interlocking pavers has been said to originate from the Ancient Romans 2000
years ago. The Romans attempted to build roads from simple materials and
construction, However this simple system of road buildings was able to last
millennia and centuries until today. It is said to have an excellent material
construction which makes it stand in virtually any type of natural condition .

The idea to interlock pavers on the other hand is a much-improved version of

designs to accommodate the artistic side in every pavement stroller.

The mechanism inside the interlocking pavers is that they interlock through the
use of sand. This resembles the use of bricks and stones suggesting that to
interlock pavers can be a fruitful alternative to the classic means of pavement
and road construction.
OBJECTIVES:

1. Paver blocks are very durable, and if they are adequately interlocked, they can easily last for
about 20 years.

2. Interlocking pavers connect together through the use of sand and can cover any patio, decking,
driveway or walkway.

3. Virtually any application that bricks or concrete would be used for, interlocking pavers is
another alternative. Interlocking pavers are available in many colours and design.

4. To create job opportunity.

5. To minimise the use of bricks.

Abstract:
In India, interlocking paver blocks usage was highly improved from the past decades.
Now these days parking, pedestrian and vehicle moving areas are filled by paver
blocks. Some of issues have been studied in the paver blocks in earlier like weak in its
strength and durable. By replacing the cementitious materials by fly ash or rice husk
ash and changing aggregates by fiber it was fulfilled. This paver blocks carries over
the extraneous of aggregates and the binding materials used in paver blocks.
Comparing with the natural fiber the artificial fiber plays a very optimum role in
strength characteristics and absorption of water seems to be medium in level.
Keywords: paver blocks, weak – strength and durable, fly ash, rice husk ash, fibers.

Interlocking Concrete Block Pavement [ICBP] has been extensively used in a number of countries for
quite sometimes as a specialized problem-solving technique for providing pavement in areas where
conventional types of construction are less durable due to many operational and environmental
constraints. ICPB technology has been introduced in India in construction, a decade ago, for specific
requirement viz. footpaths, parking areas etc. But now being adopted extensively in different uses
where the conventional construction of pavement using hot bituminous mix or cement concrete
technology is not feasible or desirable. The paper dwells upon material, construction and laying of
concrete block pavement as a new approach in construction of pavement using Interlocking Concrete
Paver Blocks.
METHDOLOGY:
RAW MATERIALS :

 Aggregate(6mm to 20mm).
 Crushed stone dust.
 OPC (Ordinary Portland cement).
 Water.
 Concrete Admixtures Chemicals.
 Colors.
 Coating(for surface glossy look).
MACHNES/EQUIPMENTS:

1. VIBRATOR:
The vibrating table is
used to compact concrete materials
inside cubes,cylindres and beam
molds. It can deliver the vibrating
movement controls by vibro
compacting motor with fixed
amplitude.
It costs around 45,000.
CONCRETE MIXING PAN:

 Mixture should be made of one

part of cement, two parts of sand
three parts of gravel. If you are
planning on using a colorant
powder, you will also want to add
before mixing in the water.
 It costs around 75,000.
COLOR MIXER PAN:

 It is to effectively blend grit

cement, fly ash and small
granules.provided with heavy duty
blades and rollers, this mixer is
manufactured using high grade
metal alloys.
 It is mainly used for mixing of
colour pigment.
 It costs around 40,000.
MANUFACTURING PROCESS:
 The process involves proportioning, mixing, compacting, curing and drying .A
concrete mix of 1:2:4 cement:sand:stone chips by volume are used for making
paving blocks. All the items of raw materials are placed in the concrete mixer
and water added. The mixer is then rotated for 15 to 20 minutes.
 Then the mixture is carried by trolleys and mixture is placed into the rubber
mould. The rubber mould is carried through the vibrator which helps mixture
to settle down properly in the rubber mould.
 After these process, the moulds are ready for quiring process.
 After quiring period, the Interlocking pavers are ready to fix.
LAYING OF INTERLOCKING PAVERS:

 STEP–1: LAY BEDDING SAND

A bed of sand is necessary to provide final
levelling properties and help secure the
pavers in place. Use clean, sharp concrete
sand 1-inch deep. Allow for 1 cubic yard of
sand per 300 square feet of project area.
STEP NO 2:

 STEP-2 : INSTALL EDGE RESTRAINT

Install a stable edge restraint to eliminate
any lateral movement of the pavers and sand
bedding. Examples of edge restraints include
an existing (such as the side of a house, vinyl
molded restraints or concrete restraints.
STEP NO 3:

 STEP-3: LAY THE PAVERS

Place pavers flat on the sand bed, working in a
forward motion. start the process at either a
90-degree corner or within the field by using a
pre-set string to guide the straightness of the
pavers.
STEP NO 4:

 STEP-4 : VIBRATE THE PAVERS

Once the paver field and borders have been
placed, spread a light layer of sand over the
pavers and run a vibrating plate compactor
over them to begin the interlocking process.
STEP NO 5:

 STEP-5: SAND THE PAVERS

Spread dry paver joint or masonry
sand over the surface of the paver
area approximately ¼ inch deep.
Using the vibrating plate compactor,
pass over the sanded pavers two or
three times to allow sand to fill the
voids between the pavers. sweep
remaining sand into voids until they
are completely filled.
