. Before Genocide we used to live in big families and the

lives were average, many families were cultivators and
farmers where people used to Drink milk and eat
potatoes, cassava, beans etc
The Genocide of1994 was planned and executed with
such atrocity that within 100 days it took the lives of
more than million people of Rwanda. The survivors of
the massacres were mainly orphans, many of whom
found themselves as children suddenly heads of the
household; widows, grandmothers living along without
children or family, women infected with AIDS as the
result of victimization by rape, and those left
handicapped either physically or mentally. These
massacres have left a population traumatized, destitute,
homeless and penniless, without the means to survive
on their own.

We become
Homeless due
to Genocide

After losing
our parents
we had to
assume a
role of
parenting
actually
needed to
be parented

All of the members in the village of Kinyinya were

placed here as the result of the donations from the
government of Rwanda.

Issue and
Challenges
During the 1994
Genocide against the
Tutsi many kids lost their
parents and extended
families. These orphans
often had to assume a
parental role for their
younger brothers and
sisters while still trying
to be kids themselves.
The lack of education and
resources left them
especially vulnerable.
This vulnerability often
results in unwanted
pregnancies, and many
young, single mothers
unable to provide
sufficient childhood care,
including education.

Who We Are
The Kuraneza Early
Childhood
Development (ECD)
project provides
care and basic
education to 140
vulnerable kids of
3-6 years.
The Kuraneza
nursery supports
underprivileged
kids of single
mothers, orphans,
and families living
with HIV/AIDS.

Effective Early Childhood Development helps

kids at risk of poor development due to a lack
of parental care and learning opportunities to
break free from the poverty cycle in Rwanda.
Peace and Hope Initiative was founded in
2012, and served 48 children.
But later , in 2015, it serves 140 vulnerable
children.
Our goal is to serve over 200 children by
2016.

TOGETHER WE SUCCEED

Peace and Hope Initiative

Objectives
Improve living conditions for the household heads,
enabling them to better fulfill their responsibilities
towards the orphans (ex. Nutrition, Education).

Promote education, schooling, professionalism, and

sustainable incomes primarily for the oldest Widow
and Orphans who have not had the privilege of
attending school.
Prevent negative ideology and promote a
nondiscriminatory environment.
Assist our fellow orphans with post-genocide
psychological and social support.

To create a sense of unity and collaboration within

Rwanda, as well as with the international community.

How does The Peace and Hope

Initiative contribute to the
community in Kinyinya?

The Kuranza (meaning

"good growth") project
offers early childcare and
education enabling
underprivileged kids to
learn and play in a safe and
caring environment. Kids
are provided education,
nutrition, counseling,
water and sanitation
services through skilled
caretakers during the key
developmental stages. The
project supports kids from
families with no means to
afford to pay for a nursery
school/kindergarten.
Currently approx. 140 kids
attend the nursery, the aim
is to expand the capacity to
200.

Long Term Impact

The project aims to
reduce vulnerability of
200 kids in the Kinyinya
community.
Improvement in the
children's' development,
wellbeing and learning
ability will increase their
chances to successfully
pass primary school and
succeed in higher
education, which is
essentially the key to
breaking the poverty
cycle.
