Public distribution system is a government-sponsored chain

of shops entrusted with the work of distributing basic food and
non-food commodities to the needy sections of the society at
very cheap prices
PDS is regulated by both central and state government. Statelevel ministries of food and supplies regulate the network of fair
price shops
The central government is responsible for procurement,
storage, transportation, and bulk allocation of food grains. After
this the responsibility moves over to State government for
distributing the food to the consumers through the established
network of fair price shops

PDS IN
INDIA
PDS in India has
its origin in the
'rationing' system
introduced in
British era during
the World War
II,started in 1939
in Bombay and
subsequently
extended to other
cities and towns

essential
commodities like
sugar, cooking
coal, kerosene oil
were added to the
commodity basket
of PDS in the
second five year
plan

When world war

ended, India like
other countries
decided to abolish
the rationing
system

Department of
Food under the
Government of
India was created
in 1942, which
helped in food
matters getting
the serious
attention of the
government

But after
independence, it
was retained a
deliberate social
policy by India &
was included in
the first 5 year
plan

Creation of Food
Corporation of
India and
Agricultural Prices
Commission in
1965 further
consolidated the
position of PDS
