STRESS-STRAIN RELATIONSHIP FOR

TWO-DIMENSIONAL PROBLEMS
In two dimensions, the problems are
modeled as:
(1)Plane Stress Problem
(2)Plane Strain Problem

PLANE STRESS PROBLEM: The

plane stress condition is
characterized by very small
dimensions in one of the normal
directions. A thin planer body
subjected to in plane loading on its
edge surface is shown in fig. which is
said to be plane stress.

Examples of plane stress

problems: Thin circular disc is
subjected to in-plane loading, thin
plates subjected to tensile loading.
In such cases, the stress components
z, yz, zx are zero.
Hence the equation for stress-strain
relationship can be written as:

PLANE STRAIN PROBLEM:

Problems involving a long body
whose geometry and loading do not
vary significantly in the longitudinal
direction are preferred as plain
strain problems.

Examples of plain strain

problems : Long dam whose height
and width are measurable in meters
whereas length runs into kilometers,
long cylinder like tunnel.

In such cases, the strain components

z, yz, zx are zero. Therefore the
equation can be written as:

TEMPERATURE EFFECTS
The body maybe subjected to initial
strains, which maybe due to change
in temperature.
The initial strains at a point in a body
due to change in temp. are given by,

Figure shows the stress-strain

diagram in the presence of initial
strains. Hence in the presence of
initial strains, the stresses at a point
are given by,
{} = [D] [ {} {0} ].

The equation can be written as:

PLANE STRESS PROBLEM WITH

TEMP. EFFECTS
For plane stress problem z=yz=zx=0
Hence equation can be modified to
incorporate the initial strains due to
change in temperature as,

TEMP. EFFECTS
