DIGIPAKS

WHAT IS A DIGIPAK?
Definition: a type of packaging for CDs or DVDs, typically made from cardboard with an internal plastic holder for one or
more discs.
They have gate fold effects so they can be folded into each other

A digipak is normally made out of card packaging. It differs from a traditional case, or 'jewel case' as this is made from plastic.

Digipaks have 4-8 panels, again making them differ from a traditional jewel case. Having more panels means that more information and
images can be put on, or so more than one CD can go in.

They will have more information than a traditional case because there is more space for it to go on.

It can be a helpful marketing tool, as they are often said to be 'Special edition' , 'Limited edition' or 'Collectors edition'

There is often additional material/ extra disc/poster/lyrics/booklet

This is a digipak of Michael Jacksons last album after his death. This is it,
which featured unreleased music as well as new releases. Most people
would see this music fitting under the pop genre, therefore you could say
this digipak adheres to the conventions of the pop genre. The album cover
has a happy and homely feel to it as they have used warm and bright
colours. A common convention of pop music digipaks is that they will
usually have an image of the artist/band on the front, this Michael Jackson
digipak adheres to this convention as they show a silhouette of him
performing one of his famous dance moves. Another example of how this
digipak adheres to the conventions of the pop genre is because they have
used an abstract design, they have inserted an image of the concert itself
into the silhouette of Michael Jackson.

Andrew Goodwins theory states that all music genres have different genre
characteristics, this relates to the Michael Jackson digipak as it demonstrates
pop characteristics. Pop digipaks will usually show us a range of different
shots of the artist, they will often use close ups of the artist to gain the fans
attention. By using the image of Michael Jackson in one of his signature
moves this will straight away tell people what the product is and who it is
about.

This digipak contains all the elements that youd expect to see on any digipak, it
tells you what tracks are on the disc, it states the main title boldly at the top of
the frame. It also includes some rating and reviews which will make someone
want to buy it as they have a reliable source telling them that the product is
good. They have kept the typography for this digipak fairly simple, this makes the
product seem more professional and classy. They use a plain background with a
silhouette of Michael Jackson filled with images from his tour placed on top of it,
this mix of simplicity and creativity adheres to the pop genre conventions, the
product looks classy and eye catching. This style of packaging will attract the
teenage audience and young people as they have used colourful eye catching
colours, this adheres to the pop genre as they would appeal to younger
generations.
