CHRONOLOGY OF
DECIDUOUS AND
PERMANENT
DENTITION

ERUPTION-DENOTES

MORE COMPLETELY
CONTINUOUS TOOTH MOVEMENT FROM
THE DENTAL BUD TO OCCLUSAL
CONTACT.
AMOUNT OF ROOT RESORPTION OF
PRIMARY TOOTH IS DIRECTELY
PROPORTIONAL TO THE AMOUNT OF
DEVELOPMENT OF PERMANENT TEETH.
CALCIFICATION OR MINERALIZATION OF
THE ORGANIC MATRIX OF A
TOOTH,ROOT FORMATION,AND TOOTH
ERUPTION ARE IMPORTANT INDICATORS
OF DENTAL AGE.

LEE-WAY SPACE OF NANCe

-IT IS DEFINED AS THE DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN MESIO-DISTAL WIDTH OF
DECIDUOUS 1ST - 2ND MOLARS AND
PERMANENT SUCCESSORS i.e. 1st -2nd
premolars.
-permanent premolars occupy the space
between permanent canine and
permanent 1st molar. the MESIO-DISTAL
WIDTH of permanent 1st -2nd premolars
will be less than MESIO-DISTAL WIDTH OF
DECIDUOUS 1ST - 2ND MOLARS.
-it is approximately 47mm-42.2mm=4.8mm

Significance
1) Clinicians use chronology to avoid treatment that can
damage developing teeth.
2) To assess an unknown age of a patient(forensic
odontology).
3) To assess growth.
4) Due to a developmental anomaly sometimes deciduous
tooth wont shed off or permanent tooth bud is absent,
at that time deciduous tooth itself is considered to be a
permanent one.
5) Delayed shedding impairs growth of permanent
successors leading to crowding of the teeth and
misalignment of permanent teeth for which the
individual has to go for a orthodontic treatment.
