Cylinder & Cylinder Liner

2 Basic functions of Cylinder:
To retain the working fluid i.e. air & Fuel mixture
To Guide the piston.
Combustion of fuel takes place inside the cylinder &
very high temp. are encountered, there fore some
cooling arrangment is necessary.
1. Water cooled.
2. Air cooled : Small single cyl. Engines are usually
air cooled, cylinders are provided with FINs over
the outer surface of the cyl. Excess heat of
combustion is transmitted by the cylinder wall to
the surroundings by FINs.

IP = BP/ = 4000/0.8 = IP = 5000W
IP = (Pm lAn)/60 =>
5000 = (0.35(1.5D/1000)(D2/4)(1200/2))/(60)
D=106.6mm =108mm
l=1.5D = 1.5*108 = 160mm
L = 1.15 l = 1.15*160 = 184 mm.

Cylinder Head Design

Cylinder

Head contains:
1. Inlet & Exhaust Valves,
2. Spark plug in SI & Injector in CI Engines

Assumption: Cylinder head is flat.

Cylinder Head Thickness is given by
(th in mm) = D
Where K = Constant (0.162)
c = Allowable circumferential Stress in N/mm2
c = t = (Sut)/ FOS (or assumed 30 to 50 N/mm2

3 imp. Parameters in design
1. Number of Studs (z) :
Min Num: = 0.01D + 4
Max Num: = 0.02 D + 4
2. Diameter of Studs: is obtained by equating the
max. gas force acting on the cylinder head to the
resisting force offered by all studs.
Gas force :
