Objective of Project

After analyzing an attempt has been made to suggest the

best optimal compression ratio at which engine could work
with higher thermal efficiency and lower fuel consumption.

An experimental investigation is carried out to study the

effect of compression ratio on variable compression ratio
engine. In the experiment performance characteristics are
to be studied at various compression ratio and loads. This
would give complete idea how engine behaves at various
load and compression ratios.

Literature Review

But at high loads, we prefer Low compression

ratio because for more power output, we send
compressed- hot air into the piston. This as a side
effect may cause knocking and early detonation.
This phenomenon can be prevented by decreasing
the compression ratio causing clearance to
increase, thus providing more volume

High compression ratio is good for stability at

low loads and it provides better thermal efficiency.

Methodology

It is a direct injection, four stroke, single

cylinder variable compression ratio, diesel
engine in which we can vary the compression
ratio by tilting cylinder head.

The pump is provided for supplying water to

eddy current dynamometer and engine cooling.

We can vary load by eddy current dynometer

mounted in the setup.

A rotameter is provided for engine cooling water

flow measurement.

All the other measurements can be taken from

control panel.

Thermocouple type temperature sensors measure

cooling water inlet, outlet and exhaust
temperatures. These temperatures are digitally
indicated on indicator suited on control panel.
