RELAXATION

ORelaxation Sessions

employed throughout the PST
program. It will focus on the
use of Progressive Muscular
Relaxation (PMR).
OThe athlete will be asked to
practice the Centring technique
which helps control breathing.

ORationale for Relaxation


O High levels of somatic and cognitive
anxiety are detrimental to
performance (Horn, 2002), within a
sport such as gymnastics. Athletes in
closed skill sports (such as gymnastics)
report more concerns about anxiety
management than other athletes
(Grandjean & taylor, 2002). Relaxation
is often cited as the most important
skills to learn (Fournier et al. 2005).
