API Quality Program

API is an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited

standards developing organization, operating with approved
standards development procedures and undergoing regular audits
of its processes.
API produces standards, recommended practices, specifications,
codes and technical publications, reports and studies that cover
each segment of the industry.
API standards promote the use of safe, interchangeable equipment
and operations through the use of proven, sound engineering
practices as well as help reduce regulatory compliance costs, and in
conjunction with APIs Quality Programs, many of these standards
form the basis of API certification programs.

API Quality Program

There are two kind of Program Certified by API:
Quality Management System : API Spec Q1
Product Specification and Standards : API Monogram

http://www.umam.web.id

API Spec Q1

This specification defines the quality management system

requirements for the design, development, production, installation
and service of products for the petroleum, petrochemical and
natural gas industry. This specification also sets forth the
minimum quality management system requirements, which
applied in conjunction with API industry standards, are necessary
to obtain a license to use the API monogram.

This standard specifies requirements for a quality management

system where an organization,
a) needs to demonstrate its ability to consistently provide product
that meets customer and applicable regulatory requirements, and
b) aims to enhance customer satisfaction through the effective
application of the system, including processes for continual
improvement of the system and the assurance of conformity to
customer and applicable regulatory requirements.

API Spec Q1

This edition of API Spec Q1 is the identical national

adoption of ISO TS 29001, Petroleum, petrochemical and
natural gas industries-Sector specific requirementsRequirements for product and service supply organizations,
with the addition of the API Monogram Annex.
API Spec Q1 is consistent with ISO 9001 Series with
aproximately 33 additional requirements or clauses.

API MONOGRAM

Every day, around the world, the oil and natural gas industry relies
on equipment and products identified by the API Monogram to get
the job done right. Designed for manufacturers of production
equipment, drilling equipment and now, refinery equipment, the API
Monogram Program lets companies show the world what theyre
made of.
The API Monogram Program grants permission to an API Licensee
to apply the API Monogram to applicable products that fall within the
scope of the program
API Monogram specifies requirements and gives recommendations
for the performance, dimensional and functional interchangeability,
design, materials, testing, inspection, welding, marking, handling,
storing, shipment and purchasing, of equipments for use in the
petroleum and natural gas industries. Examples:
- API 16A For Drill Through Equipment - BOP
- API 6A For Wellhead and Christmass Tree Equipment
- API 650 for Welded Tank for Oil Storage

http://www.umam.web.id

API 12P

Standard designs are based on a maximum

working pressure equal to the hydrostatic
head of the stored fluid plus 6 in. of water
column (0.217 psig) and 2 in. of water
column vacuum. Design criteria are
dependent on method of construction.
Filament winding, chop-spray and
combinations of these methods (commonly
referred to as chop-hoop) are covered.
Tanks constructed using hand lay-up
(contact molding) are to be designed to the
same standard as chop-spray construction.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Question)

Q: Where are storage tanks used in the petroleum industry?

A: Storage tanks are found in most sectors of the petroleum industry.
These include exploration & production, refining, marketing, and
pipelines.
Q: What are the different types of storage tanks?
A: Storage tanks can be divided into two basic types: aboveground
(AST) and underground (UST). ASTs are used in production, refining,
marketing, and pipeline operations. USTs are typically used in the
marketing of gasoline at retail service stations.
Q: What are the API standards for construction of new ASTs?
A: Spec. 12B, Bolted Tanks for Storage of Production Liquids; Spec.
12D, Field Welded Tanks for Storage of Production Liquids; Spec. 12F,
Shop Welded Tanks for Storage of Production Liquids; Spec. 12P,
Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic Tanks; API 620, Design and Construction
of Large, Welded, Low-Pressure Storage Tanks; API 650, Welded Steel
Tanks for Oil Storage.
Q: What is the difference between tanks constructed to the API
12 series specifications for production operations and API 650
tanks?
A: Production tanks are usually much smaller than API 650 tanks and
are often subject to different operating conditions.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Question)

Q: What size tanks are covered by API refining,

marketing, and pipeline standards?
A: Generally, the minimum size is 1100 gallons (4164 liters).
API design standards for ASTs in refining, marketing, and
pipeline facilities do not specify a maximum size.
Q: What are the API standards for the inspection and
repair of ASTs currently in-service?
A: Spec. 12R1, Setting, Maintenance, Inspection, Operation,
and Repair of Tanks in Production Service; API 653, Tanks
Inspection, Repair, Alteration, and Reconstruction.
Q: Does API certify tank manufacturers?
A: Yes, to Specifications 12B, 12D, and 12F. API does not
certify manufacturers to Std. 650 at this time.
Q: How many facilities has reached API 12 B, 12 D, 12
F?
A: 24 facilities for these series all over the world. (12B =1
certification, 12D= 4 certification, (12F=21 certification).

FAQ (Frequently Asked Question)

Q: Does API issue a certificate to verify that a tank has

been built to API 620 or 650?
A: No. The manufacturer is responsible for certifying that the
tank has been constructed in accordance with API 650 (see API
650, Section 8.3)
Q: How do I get my tank certified by API to Standard
620 or 650?
A: API no longer certifies tanks built to API 620 or 650. The
API Monogram Program does include tanks built to
Specifications 12B, 12D, and 12F.
Q: Can API provide assistance or consultation on tank
design or inspection?
A: No. API does not act as a consultant on specific engineering
problems or on the general application of its standards. API will
provide an interpretation of the requirements in the standard
and will address suggested changes based on new data or
technology. Please refer to API 620, Appendix J; API 650,
Appendix D; or API 653, Appendix E for further information in
interpretations.
