Sheet-Metal Forming
Processes
Sheet metal processes can be broken down into two major
classifications and one minor classification.
Shearing processes-- processes which apply shearing forces to
cut, fracture, or separate the material.
Forming processes -- processes which cause the metal to
undergo desired shape changes without failure, excessive
thinning, or cracking. This includes bending and stretching.
Finishing processes -- processes which are used to improve the
final surface characteristics.
Shearing Operations
Shearing
Progressive die drawing is a cold forming process utilizing a series of stations to perform
two or more simultaneous operations on sheet metal. During each stroke of the machine,
the final workpiece is developed as the strip of sheet metal moves through the die.

Air Bending
Rotary Bending
