Age related Macular Degeneration

Previously known as SENILE MACULAR
DEGENERATION, age related macular
degeneration is an atrophic
degenerative process that affects the
macula and surrounding tissues resulting
in CENTRAL VISUAL DEFICITS

ETIOLOGY and RISK FACTORS

The main etiology or cause is unknown
the incidence is higher in over 50
years old
maybe heriditary

pathophysiology
two types of AMD
1. Nonexudative (dry)- is characterized
by atrophy and degeneration of the
outer retina and underlying structure
-. Yellowish round spots (drusen)- is seen
on the retina and macula with
opthalmoscope. Overtime these spots
will increase, enlarge, and calcify

2. Exudative (wet)- bruchs membrane, which lies
just beneath the pigmented epithelial cell layer of
the retina, becomes compromised
-This result in serous fluids leaks from the choroid,
with accompanying proliferation of choroidal blood
vessels
symptoms:
- metamorphophasia- blurred,wavy distortion of
vision
- blurred scotoma or decreased central visual
acuity

pathophysiology
loss of central vision

management
