VISIBLE LIGHT

Presentation By: Hadiya Khalid and Alizah Fareed

DEFINITION:
Visible light is a range of electromagnetic radiation that
can be detected by the human eye.
The wavelengths associated with this range are 380 nm
to 750 nm. (1 nm = 10-9 m)

GENERATION:
It is produced by rearrangements (orbital shifts)
in the outer electrons of atoms.
Visible light is created when electrons that are
located inside atoms return to their ground state
after being in an excited state.

DETECTION
Visible light can be detected by:
Eye (by stimulating nerve endings of human retina)
Photographic plates
Photocell.

DISPERSION OF WHITE LIGHT

White light is actually made up of a whole range of
colours, mixed together.
Each color has a different wavelength. Red has the
longest wavelength and violet has the shortest wavelength .

When all the waves are seen together, they make white
light.

SOURCES:
Light waves are given off by anything that's hot enough
to glow.
Sun is the largest source of visible light on earth.
Fireflies, light bulbs, and stars all emit visible light.
Light waves can also be made using a laser.

USES:

It generally enables us to see things

Used in optical fibres in telecommunications
Photovoltaic cells (solar cells)
In medicine e.g. laparoscopy, endoscopy
Photography is an important use
Can cause chemical reaction
