WHAT IS FEDERALISM?
Federalism is a system of govt. In
which the power is divided
between a central authority and
various constituent units of
country
Federalism has two levels of
govt.
One is the govt for the entire
country.

Features of federalism: There are two or more tiers of govt.


The jurisdictions of the respective
tiers of govt are specified in
constitutions.
Courts have the power to interpret
the constitution and powers of govt.
Sources of revenue for each level of
govt. to financial autonomy.

What makes India a federal


country?
India has emerged as an independent
nation after a painful an bloody
partition.
Constitution contains three lists: Union list:- It includes foreign affairs
banking and currency.
State list:- It includes police ,trade ,
and agriculture.
Concurrent list:- It includes both
union and state list.

HOW IS FEDERALISM PRACTISED?


LINGUISTIC STATES:- After independence in
1950, the boundaries of several old states
were changed in order to create new
states. This was done to ensure people
who spoke same language, common
culture live in the same state.
LANGUAGE POLICY:- Constitution did not
give the status of national language. Hindi
was identified as optional language but
the central govt. has not imposed hindi on
states where people speaks different
language.

CENTER STATE RELATION:In past central govt. has


misused the constitution to
dismiss state govt. that
were controlled by rival
parties. This under mind
