Chonmage
This is a male hairstyle. The
Samourais adopted this hair cut
during the Edo period (16031686), it was designed to hold a
samurai helmet steady atop the
head. More recently, it was
associated with sumo wresters. A
traditional Edoerachonmagefeatured a shaved
pate. The remaining hair, which
was long, was oiled and tied into a
smallqueuewhich was folded
onto the top of the head in the
characteristic topknot.

For the duration of the Edo period,
this was a coiffure normally worn
byyoung adultsfemale . Hair is
gathered together at the crown of
the head, and a small part of of
the bun is sectioned to point
outwards.
