Flow Battery

A flow battery, or
redox flow battery
(after reduction
oxidation), is a type of
rechargeable battery
where rechargeability
is provided by two
chemical components
dissolved in liquids
contained within the
system and separated
by a membrane.

Type Of Flow Batteries

Zinc Bromine,
Polysulfide Bromide (PSB) and
Vanadium Redox

Polysulphide Bromide
(PSB)

Regenerative fuel cell technology

Reversible electrochemical reaction

between two salt solution electrolytes i.e.
NaBr & Na2Sx

PSB electrolytes are brought close

together in the reactor cells where they
are separated by a polymer membrane
that only allows sodium ions to go through.

HOW DOES IT WORKS?

At the negative electrode:

2Na2S2 Na2S4 + 2Na+ + 2e

sodium disulfide becomes sodium

polysulphide

At the positive electrode:

NaBr3 + 2Na+ + 2e 3NaBr

sodium tribromide becomes sodium

bromide

Properties

This reaction can be reversed when a

current is supplied to the electrodes

The system is defined as a fuel cell

because the electrodes are not consumed
by the reaction

Electrolyte act only as a surface for the

reaction.

Properties

Produce about 1.5V

Efficiency is about 75%

Both electrolyte are abundantly available

Electrolyte are inexpensive

Large Scale Production

In 2002, a 12 MW prototype electrical storage

facility was built at Little Barford Power Station
in the UK, which uses polysulfide bromide
flow batteries. Although the facility was
completed, due to engineering issues in scaling
up the technology, it was never fully
commissioned.

A plant located at the Tennessee Valley

Authority (TVA) facility in Columbus, Mississippi,
United States was never completed.
