BAROQUE PERIOD
The Baroque is often
thought of as a period
of artistic style that
used exaggerated
motion and clear,
easily interpreted
detail to produce
drama, tension,
exuberance, and
grandeur in sculpture,
painting, architecture,
literature, dance,
theater, and music.

This
period began
in 1600 until 1750s.
The
word
baroque
comes
from
the
Portuguese
word
barroco,
meaning
misshapen pearl
Characteristics of Baroque Music
Melodies
sound elaborate and ornamental
Melodies are not easy to sing or remember
Primarily contrapuntal textures with some
homophony
Dynamic contrast alternation between
loud and soft
Music genres operas, oratorios, suites,
toccatos, concerto grosso
Orchestra consists of strings and continuo
Harpsichord and organ are the keyboard
instruments that are commonly used.
By
adding the accidentals the
major/minor key system is developed.
Most common instruments during this
period are harpsichord and organ.
During this period, instrumental
music became as important as the
vocal music.
New instrumental techniques and
changes in musical notation were
developed.
Monody
was
an
important
development in Baroque music that
distinguishes it from the polyphonybased vocal music of the Renaissance
period, in which multiple singers sang
different melodic lines simultaneously.
Camerata (Italian word for society) is
a group of composers, nobles and
poets who meet together to discuss
different things which includes arts.
VOCAL FORMS
OPERA
OPERA
A drama that is primarily
sung,
accompanied
by
instruments, and presented
on stage. Operas typically
alternate
between
recitative, speech-like song
that advances the plot and
arias,

Recitative- is a free form for solo
voice with accompaniment in
which the vocal melody
approximates the natural rhythm
and pitch inflected.

accompaniment in which the
vocal parts is written in a fairly
complex style, often with several

The truly great
opera was composed
by Monteverdi in

ORATORIO
ORATORIO
An
extended
musical drama with
text
based
on
religious
subject
matter, intended for
performance without
same as in
opera. The main
difference was
that an Oratorio
was based on a
sacred story.
The well
known oratorio
is the Messiah
by Handel

CANTATA
An extended
consisting of a
succession of
recitatives and set
pieces such as arias,
duet and choruses.
Is
a vocal
composition with
an instrumental
accompaniment,
typically in several
movements, often,
involving a choir.
