Plasma Arc Welding

Advantages - Disadvantages
Application

Introduction
Introduced to the industrial in 1964
Method that provide a better control at low
current

PAW is used to control a good accuracy and

good quality weld

Provide a long lifetime for electrode

Plasma Arc Welding

Methods of plasma-arc
welding
Transferred-arc method
The workpiece being welded is part of the
electrical circuit. The arc transfers from the
electrode (-) to the workpiece (+)

Nontransferred method
the arc occurs between the electrode(-) and
the nozzle(+), and the heat is carried to the
workpiece by the plasma gas.

Ilustration

Equipment
Power Source : Open Circuit
Voltage 80 V

Current 50 300A
Arus searah (DC) diperlukan
A cooling system
Welding Torch Non
Comsumable tungsten
electrode

Plasma Gas : Argon

Shielding Gas : Argon,
Argon/Hydrogen or Helium

How it works?

Advantage
Control and Quality, torch design allows for the
better control of the arch

Faster Travel Speed, higher heat concentration

and the plasma jet allows higher travel speed

High penetratring ability KEYHOLE EFFECT

Useful for semiautomatic and automatic
processes

Disadvantage
Special protection for infrared and UV radiation
produced

Complex and Costly, PAW equipment are very

expensive

Can weld only up to 25mm thickness

High Noise 100dB
High Power electrical equipment

Application
Aerospace Industries
Cryogenics
Foodstuff and Chemical
Industries

Automobiles and
Railways

Ship Construction
Tank Equipment and
Pipeline Construction
