Spesific Heat of Solid

Subtance

OBJECTIVES
Determining specific heat from various of
metal

EQUIPMENTS

Calorimeter with thermometer

measures cylinder
alumunium cylinder
iron block
yarn.

Basic Theory
If a metal receive calor energy from heated
will have it temperature increase, heat energy
(calor) that needed to increases temperature
of a mass of metal always symbolized by cz.
Quantity of heat energy can be measured with
calorimeter, in ideal (true) calorimeter heat
transfer can be avoided. However for real,
calorimeter also absorb a number of heat energy
that given. So heat capacity from calorimeter
must be considered.

If calorimeter is filled water with mass ma and

early temperature T1 that have same value with
calorimeter temperature. Then, put metal with mz
with temperature T2 to inner calorimeter. In
calorimeter will be happen energy transfer from
metal to water and calorimeter. So will be got
equilibrium temperature T3. heat transfer to
environment have small value so it can be
vanished. In this case, specify heat of solid
substance can be showed with equation :
(mac C)(T3 T1)
Cz =
mz(T2 T3)
With :
c = heat specify of water ( Kal/gr0C)
C = heat capacity of calorimeter ( Kal/0C)
cz = heat specify of solid substance ( Kal/gr0C)

Experiment procedure

Measure mass of alumunium block using OHauss

heighing machine.
Fill calorimeter with 100 cm3 of water (measured by
measureds glass).
Give heat energy to alumunium block with filled into
boiling water during 5 minutes, then measurre that
water and we get T2.
Take alumunium block and dry quickly, the fill into
calorimeter.
Stir water in calorimeter constantly until equilibrium
temperature happened (T3).
Repeat experiment above with volumeof water 200
cm3.
Repeat this procedure with iron block.
