Cobalt-based alloys have been in use for several

decades in the manufacturing of various components

such as vanes, blades or combustion chambers in gas
turbines (both the industrial type and aeroengines).
Cobalt base alloys possess superior strength at very
high temperatures compared to nickel base superalloys.
Better weldability and better thermal fatigue resistance.

 Their design is aimed primarily at improving elevated

temperature strength by use of solid-solution- and
carbide-strengthening mechanisms.
Such mechanisms must tolerate substantial additions of
chromium (above 20 wt.%) in order to obtain a
satisfactory oxidation resistance and a good hot
corrosion resistance.
Better hot corrosion resistance in contaminated gas
turbine atmospheres due to their higher Cr contents.
Heat Treatment
Precipitation hardening via carbide formation
Co-based alloys are heat treated to control
precipitation, which controls properties.
