MICROSCOPE

MICROSCOPE
One of the most important tools in biology.
Was invented by Anton van Leeuwenhoek (1632 - 1723).
Used to enlarge the size of the object.
It is possible to view the physical appearance of a very small
organism.

Opens a new area to biology.

i.e. Microbiology

KINDS OF MICROSCOPE
Compound Microscope
Commonly used in
classroom work.
Requires a source of light in
order to view the specimen.

KINDS OF MICROSCOPE
Binocular Microscope
Used for demonstration and
dissection.
Needs a source of electric
current.

KINDS OF MICROSCOPE
Dissecting Microscope
Used for examining and
dissecting the specimen
under low power objective.
Requires electric current.

KINDS OF MICROSCOPE
Ultraviolet Microscope
Can magnify up to 10,000
times.

KINDS OF MICROSCOPE
Electron Microscope
Can magnify up to more
than 500,000 times.
The best tool used in
biomedical research.

KINDS OF MICROSCOPE
Phase Contrast
Microscope
Utilizes the refraction of
light.

Ocular or Eyepiece use in viewing the specimen. It

provides virtual image of the specimen.
Low power objective use to magnify the object to
10 to 15x. It shows the object being focused a general
view.
High power objective magnifies the object 45x.
Oil immersion objective magnifies the object 100x.

Base supports the entire microscope.

Pillar a column that helps support the microscope.
Arm use in carrying the microscope.
Inclination joint use in tilting or moving the microscope.
Draw tube adjusts the distance between the objectives
and the eyepiece.
Body tube connects the upper parts of the microscope to
its lower parts.
Revolving Nose piece use to change the position of the
objective lens.
Dust shield protects the lenses from dust.
Stage the place where the glass slide is placed.
Stage clip use to hold the glass slide containing the
specimen.
Coarse adjustment screw use to control the position of
the body tube.
Fine adjustment screw use for fine focusing and when
using the HPO.
