Alchemania

Katie, Jordan, Sally

Playing Instructions
1. Each player chooses a playing piece, and rolls the die to determine the order of play.
2. The first player rolls the die, and moves their piece the amount of spaces displayed on
the top side.
3. Continue alternating turns around the circle
4. If you land on a Chemical Rxn space, you must perform the chemical reaction
associated with the number of the chemical reaction (see Chemical Reaction sheet)
5. If you land on the Chance space (represented by the plant symbol), you must pick a
Chance card, and perform the action described on the card (Ex: move forward 2
spaces, move back 3)
6. The game is won when the first person reaches the center space, labeled End.
7. The winner gets to perform the most fascinating final chemical reaction listed on the
Chemical Reaction sheet, which includes a chain reaction.

Safety Precautions
Chem Rxn #1: Glow stick
The liquid inside of glow sticks is called Dibutyl Pthalate.
If the glow stick breaks and the Dibutyl Pthalate is consumed, it could
potentially cause health effects such as liver and kidney failure.
Keep liquid away from eyes and mouth if glow stick breaks, and wear
goggles and gloves while using.
Chem Rxn #2: Copper Chloride
Breathing Copper Chloride can irritate the nose, throat, and lungs,
and ingesting can irritate the stomach.

Safety Precautions Continued

Chem Rxn #3:
Copper nitrate can be harmful if swallowed, and irritating to eyes and
skin.
If Ammonium Sulfate is consumed in large quantities, it can cause
irritation of the gastrointestinal tract.
Wear gloves and goggles while using, and do not directly consume.
Chem Rxn #4
Sodium Carbonate can cause irritation in the gastrointestinal tract if
consumed in large quantities.

Safety Precautions Continued

Chem Rxn #5
Manganese Dioxide: if inhaled, can cause irritation to the throat, and
if ingested can cause abdominal pain and nausea.
Hydrogen Peroxide: consumption can cause stomach irritation.
Wear goggles and gloves while using both, and do not consume.

Chemical Rxn #1: Glow Sticks

C14H10O4 + H2O2 + dye ->C6H2Cl3OH + 2CO2 +
dye
Diphenyl oxalate + hydrogen peroxide + dye ->trichlorophenol + Carbon
Dioxide +dye

Activated when isolated chemicals react

Break of inner glass tube release
hydrogen peroxide which release
great amount of energy cyclin
peroxide
allowing the
interaction with
fluorescent

Chemical Rxn #2: Single

3CuCl2+2Al ->2AlCl3+3Cu
Replacement/Light
LED!
Copper Chloride+Aluminum-> Aluminum Chloride+Copper
An element replace its like element in an ionic compound or
acid
AB (aq) + C -> CB (aq) + A
Cation anion + metal ->cation + metal
Must use activity series (dont react if violate activity series)
the aluminum replaced the less active metal copper in the
aqueous solution

Chemical Rxn #3: Double Replacement

Cu(NO3)2(aq)+ (NH4)2SO4(aq) -> CuSO4(s) +
2NH4NO3(aq)
Copper(II) Nitrate + Ammonium Sulfate ->Copper(II) Sulfate +
ammonium nitrate
Two aqueous ionic compounds exchange ions and form two new ionic
compounds
AB(aq) + CD (aq)->AD (aq) + CB (?)
Like anions switch places
Doesnt react if two ionic solutions are together on product side

Chemical Rxn #4: Production of Gas

NaHCO3 (s) + HC3O2 -> NaC2H3O2 + H2O

CO2

Sodium Bicarbonate + Acetic Acid -> Carbonic Acid + Water + Carbon

Dioxide
This is a double displacement reaction meaning that: the cations and
ions switch between the reactants to form a new product.
Since Carbonic Acid is unstable, it undergoes an individual
decomposition reaction hence producing CO2 (the gas)
We will use the gas to fill a balloon, which will push a lever. The lever
will pour a cup of Manganese Dioxide into a beaker, which will start
reaction #5.

Winner! (#5) Decomposition

2H2O2 + MnO2 MnO2 + O2 + 2H2O
hydrogen peroxide + manganese dioxide -> oxygen + water
When H2O2 is added to MnO2, the rate of the reaction increases
significantly.
Manganese Dioxide catalyzes the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide
into Oxygen and water, and is not consumed in the reaction.
One complex molecule decomposes into two or more separate
elements
