Postmodern Features
Clash of scales

Postmodern architecture often

includes elements that are clearly
out of scale with the rest of the
building

The mixing of large and small

classical orders, the distortion
and exaggeration of motifs,
was making a building seem
dramatic and grand

Thin
faades

Some Postmodern
buildings have thin fronts
that are clearly distinct
from the rest of the
buildings.
In some cases the
thinness is exaggerated
as a visual joke. For
example, the facade may
dissolve into the windows
at the side.

Piazza DItalia

PAIZZA D ITALIA
1975-77
New Orleans

Designed to provide the small Italian-American population

in New Orleans with an architectural focus of ethnic identity
It is more like a stage set than a building an open public
space lined with classically-styled fragments.
Which was part of the reason for the reference to the
Roman past (there is also a fountain in the shape of a map
of Italy).
The design is also littered with inside jokes, such as water
spouts in the shape ofMoores own face,
There was a newly designed order of columns (in addition
to the classicDoric, Ionic and Corinthian) that Moore
punningly called his Deli Order.
