SULFURIC ACID

By: Kendra Foster

HISTORY
Discovered in the 18th century
Discovered by Jabir ibn Hayyan
John Roebuck,English inventor, then used a lead
chamber process that made production more efficient
and less costly.
In 1831, Peregrine Phillips designed the contact
process for producing sulfuric acid
This process is what we use today
WHAT IS SULFURIC ACID
CHEMICAL FORMULA: H2SO4
SULFURIC ACID IS A STRONG MINERAL ACID
FOUND IN A LIQUID STATE BUT CAN EXIST AS A GAS
COLORLESS
The sulfur atom is bound to two oxygen atoms through
double bonds, and two hydroxyl groups (OH) through
single bonds.
Sulfuric acid is formed naturally by oxidation of sulfide
minerals in rocks.
USES OF SULFURIC ACID
USED IN THE PRODUCTION
OF FERTILIZERS AND AS AN
INDUSTRIAL
CATALYST(PLANT GROWTH
AND SURVIVAL)
USED IN LARGE AMOUNTS IN
OIL REFINING AND WASTE-
WATER
PROCESSING(DEHYDRATING
AGENT)
MAJOR COMPONENT IN ACID
RAIN
Q&A
WHAT DOES SULFURIC HAVE
ON EVERY DAY LIFE/US?
WOULDNT BE ABLE TO
BREATHE IF INHALED
WOULDNT BE ABLE TO
START CAR
IF ABSORBED ON SKIN, IT
CAN BURN
