October 1892 in the Bosnian town Travnik. He died in Serbia, on 13 March, 1975. Ivo Andri was a great writer of twentieth century. Andri's father, a silversmith, died when Andri was three years old. Andri then went to live with his aunt and uncle in the town of Viegrad, the town that he associated the most with his childhood. EARLY WORK
Throughout Andri's diplomatic career, he continued
to write and his literary reputation in Yugoslavia. In the years just after the First World War, Andri published Ex Ponto (From the Bridge) in 1918 and Nemiri (Troubles) in 1920, both collections of prose poems. He wrote part of Ex Ponto while in prison. IVO ANDRI THE NOBEL PRIZE
Andri was very active in the postwar years.
Andri earned numerous awards and honors, but the high point of his international recognition came when he was awarded (in 1962) the 1961 Nobel Prize for Literature. Following this award, Andri's international reputation grew enormously. For his part, the now 70-year-old donated all of his prize money to the library fund in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the 1960s and 1970s his literary output slowed as his health deteriorated, especially after the death of his wife. The Bridge on the Drina and The Days of the Consuls dealt with life in Bosnia under the Ottoman Empire The Bridge on the Drina, his most famous work, describes the relations between Orthodox Christian Serbs and Muslims in the town of Viegrad in eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina during the centuries of the Ottoman occupation. Andri's works are hard to classify: he was a Serbian
writer, writing in both Serbian and Croatian. The majority of his works were written in the Serbian language. He is claimed as part of Croatian literature, Serbian literature, and Bosnian literature. His works are written soberly, in language of great beauty and purity. Collections of his short stories were published at intervals from 1920 onward.
