"Narbut is a huge, almost limitless talent!"
said the famous Ukrainian graphic artist,
Professor I. Bilibin, about the young graphic
artist.

The versatility of his talents and the depth of

his intellect enabled the artist to work in the
realm of watercolor and silhouette, pen and
pencil, font composition and heraldic signs,
color prints and book illustrations, symbolic
pictures and animated scenes.
Georgy Ivanovich Narbut was born on
February 14, 1886 in an impoverished
noble family in the small estate of
Narbutivka in Chernihiv Oblast, which
was presented to the world in the
17th century. the best Ukrainian
engravers — Leontii and Oleksandr
Tarasovych. The family was large: four
brothers and two sisters. Mother was
engaged in raising children. From
1896 to 1906, he studied at the
Glukhiv Gymnasium. At home and
while studying at the local
gymnasium, he saw embroidery and
cloth, glass bears and ceramics, but he
did not know the life of ordinary
people.
In his drawings of 1903, you can see
knights and beautiful castles. The
father forbade the young artist to
paint, but he did not give up his
favorite work. In 1903, he drew a
very successful illustration for "The
Song of Roland", which is still kept in
the Kharkiv Museum of Fine Arts.
In 1906, after graduating from the
gymnasium, he showed his drawings with
great success. Mostly these were drawings for
fairy tales: "Mushroom War", "The Pea", "The
Snow Maiden", "Koschei the Immortal".
The work of Heorhiy Narbut is a bright page in Ukrainian
art. He was quite rightly called one of the most
outstanding graphs of our time.
Narbut's early work was significantly influenced by the well-known association of artists "World of Art".
In addition to the work of "World of Art" artists in the field of theatrical and decorative art and book
graphics, ancient Ukrainian painting and graphics of the XVII-XVIII centuries, heraldry of Ukrainian
families, graphics of Ukrainian manuscripts and old prints had a decisive influence on Narbut.

A significant achievement of Narbut and all Ukrainian graphics is his "Ukrainian Alphabet" (1917), in
which the artist achieved extreme simplicity and at the same time sophistication of composition,
drawing and color.
In solving the letters of the alphabet, Narbut combined the achievements of both Ukrainian
handwritten and printed books, as well as the achievements of Western European type masters.
Narbutiv's "Ukrainian Alphabet" remains unsurpassed to this day thanks to the artist's high skill and
deep understanding of typography.
Relatively early, H. Narbut developed an
interest in heraldry, which became an
important factor in his artistic biography. The
master creates a significant number of coats
of arms.
In 1915 he created a book
