Focal Point/Rule of Thirds

Focal Point: is a specific place of visual emphasis in a


work ofartor design. Most works ofarthave at least
one area of emphasis and multiplefocal points. Those
few artworks that do not have areas of emphasis
orfocal pointsusually have little or no variation.
Border: A border is an ornamental strip or design
around the edge of a printed page, a drawing, etc.
Rule of Thirds: an image is most pleasing when its
subjects or regions are composed along imaginary
lines which divide the image into thirds both
vertically and horizontally.
Beyond the Border Assignment
1. Sketchbook: Practice drawing out
your scene/images beyond the border.
(animals, plants, people, etc.)
2. Final Draft Requirements:
-Draw your border using a ruler (large
rectangle near all four sides/edges of
paper.)
-Draw a detailed scene/images in
pencil-filling the entire page. (Open
theme/free choice.)
-Color only the images
inside/overlapping the rectangle and
leave outside the border black & white
(show value with sharpie/or show
value with pencil-shade light to dark.)
3. Write your first/last name on your
artwork!
