 SAND FILTRATION

Sandfilntration are used for water

treatment.
There are three main type.
1. rapid sand filters.
2. slow sand filters.
 RAPID SAND FILTER

There are two types

1. Rapid gravity sand filters

2.Rapid Pressure sand filter

It is designed by GEORGE W.Fuller
It is multi stage treatement system
It is widely used in municipal drinking
water supply.
Rapid sand filter used relatively
coarse sand and other granualar
media to remove particle and
impurity.
 ADVANTAGE
Higher flow rate about 150 to 200
million gallons of water per acer/day.

Required small land.

Required less quantity of sand.
Less sensitive.
 Disadvantage

Required greater maintenance.

Produce large volume of sludge.

Cost of maintance is higher.

 Slow sand filters
1.They are typically 1 to 2 meter deep. Can be
rectangular and cylindrical in cross section.
2.The raw water is let in to the filter room slowly
from the pipe.
3.Water will pass through the sand layer down to
the bottom
4.It does not required chemical or electricity.
5.It is use biological process to clean water.
