What We Will Cover Today..

FACE CENTERED CUBIC

HEXAGONAL CLOSED
PACKING
FACE CENTRED CUBIC (FCC)
Primary metallic

crystalline structure
Atoms are located at each

of the corners and at the

centers of all cubic faces
Corner atoms are shared

among 8 unit cells

Each of its six face centered atom

is shared with adjacent unit cell

Coordination number is 12

FCC unit cell consists of a net total

of 4 atoms (1/8*8+1/2*6)
FCC Stacking Sequence is ABCABCABC.

<110> is the closest-packed direction

<111> is the closest packed plane
FCC PACKING FRACTION

Total number of atoms in unit cell=4

Volume of all atoms in the unit cell
v= 4*4/3*r
Volume of the unit cell , V=a
The Packing Factor,
P.F = v/V
= 16r/3a
From fig,
( 4r)= 2a or
r = a/22
P.F =?
HEXAGONAL CLOSED PACKING
Primary metallic crystalline

structure
Has three layers of atoms

In each the top and bottom layer,

there are six atoms that arrange

themselves in the shape of a
hexagon.
Seventh atom sits in the middle of

the hexagon.
The middle layer has three atoms nestle in

the triangular "grooves" of the top and bottom

plane.
Note that there are six of these "grooves"

surrounding each atom in the hexagonal

plane, but only three of them can be filled by
atoms.
Coordination number is 12

HCP unit cell consists of a net total of 6

atoms
1/6*12+1/2*2+3=6
HCP Stacking Sequence is ABABAB..
HCP PACKING FRACTION

The total number of atoms in the unit cell = 6

Volume of atoms in the unit cell,
v = 6*4/3 r
Or v = a
Fig 1
Volume of unit cell ,V = 33/2 ac ,where c is the height
of the unit cell
Packing Factor,
P.F = v/V = 2a/33ac
a/c = 3/8
P.F = /32 = 0.74
Fig 2
Similarities and Differences

Have same coordination number and

packing fraction
Differs in their packing sequence
FCC has 3 different planes with ABCABC
sequence
HCP has 2 different planes with ABABAB
sequence
