Introduction:

24-hour computer labs are something that most universities dont offer.
Most Universities think its a bad idea to have a 24-hour computer lab.
Students who struggle with time-management, and dont have enough
time during the day, are strongly affected by this.
Generally speaking, Most students can finish their work during the
normal lab hours. But again, Some students cant, because of time
problems, and thats why universities should at least have one 24-hour
computer lab.

Universities and 24-hour computer

According to a study conducted by James Miles, at the University at
Buffalo Law School (2006) , those are the results out of 62 schools.

University Testimonials

St. John University No.Students have not raised this issue in years,
and for security reasons, I do not see us doing it even if they do!
College of William and Mary Yes.[We have had] No problems (except
for the occasional propping open of doors). The obvious benefits.
Studentsandfaculty can use the library any time they want, and we
don't need to keep the circulation desk open.

Summary:

Currently, NMSU does not provide a 24-hour computer lab, the latest
they are open is until midnight. It would be important to help students
who struggle with time management, connecting to the internet, and
finding a quiet place to study.
Having a 24-hour lab could have negative effects on things, like keeping
the machines maintained, or providing staff. According to a study
conducted by James Miles, at the University at Buffalo Law School
(2006) the City University of New York (CUNY) stated Security is not as
secure late at night, so it is possible to remove library items."

Methodology:

Collaborated via Canvas Discussions and in-class time.

Brainstormed with classmates on negatives and positives regarding the
topic.
We used Facebook to pull a survey.
We used the Internet to gather information.

Results

In our Facebook pole we got 13 likes and two comments

The comments were it would be beneficial for students who study at
night, dont have the software they need (such as adobe suite and
word), for students whose computer break down.
It should be free since student already pay tuition.
Creation of more work study jobs.

Conclusion

We feel that it would be beneficial to have a free 24 hour lab for

students to use when they need it. It wouldnt have to be open every
day of the week just on Mondays, Wednesdays and, Fridays.
Based on our research we found it unnecessary to have the lab open
everyday because students wouldnt use it all the time.
Reasons being for safety among other things.

Future suggestions

We would ask more students, and staff that supervise computer labs
what they thought about it.
