CHRIST CATHEDRAL
 Christ Church Cathedral of Lipetsk. Here
are all the important divine service at the
head of the ruling Bishop of the Archbishop
of Lipetsk and Yelets Nikon. Church of
Christ has always been a spiritual centre of
Lipetsk and the dominant feature of urban
architecture. The Church building is located
on top of Cathedral mountain, in the
historic centre of the city, so it can be well
seen from different points of Lipetsk.
 Christ Cathedral is not only the main Orthodox Church in Lipetsk, but also a true
spiritual center of the city, one of its symbols. From the point of view of
architecture, of course, is the main dominant feature in the urban landscape. The
construction of the temple was initiated by the Queen Catherine the Second, and
the design of the building was designed by Italian architect Tomaso Adaline.
The construction of Cathedral Church of the Nativity began during the life of the
Empress, in 1791, and was completed after 11 years. It lasted less than a year
and soon was badly damaged by a terrible fire destroyed all the wooden
elements. By 1805, the Church was completely restored, and in 1807 took place
the solemn consecration of the main altar, in honour of the Nativity. In the years
1825-1835 was built the Cathedral bell tower, designed in the style of classicism.
At the end of the nineteenth century there was eight bells, the largest of which
weight was 489 pounds. After a few years, the bell tower and the main volume of
the Cathedral was connected to the refectory.
In 1931 the Cathedral was closed, and acutely the question of its demolition
due to deterioration, but to save the monument, it was decided to place in the
building Museum. Defend the Cathedral then managed with the active
participation of the chief architect of the region. In 1991, the Cathedral was
returned to the diocese.
