Vantablack

Nanotechnology
SLCC Spring 2017
What is Vantablack?
Vantablack is a forest of carbon nanotubes on an
aluminum foil.
It is created/designed by ALD (atomic layer
deposition) or CVD (chemical vapor deposition).
Has the highest thermal conductivity and lowest
mass-volume of any material that can be used in
high-emissivity applications.
ALD- thin film deposition technique that is based
on the sequential use of a gas phase chemical
process
CVD- chemical process used to produce high
quality, high-performance, solid materials.
Objectives & Research
Vantablack stands for, Vertically Aligned
NanoTube Array black.
Originally developed for military purposes such
as, stealth aircrafts and ammunition.
Astronomers use Vantablack inside telescopes and
other imaging devices because it helps absorb
stray radiation thus creating the effective range
and resolution to view the faintest of stars.
Properties of Vantablack
Vantablack absorbs 99.96% of incident radiation
or just 0.035% of radiation is reflected.
It has this unique property from the tightly packed
vertically aligned carbon nanotubes, letting light
to come in but not allowing light to get out.
Light absorption rates increases 10-100 times
across multiple wavelength bands.
Future Plans
Stealth aircraft, ships, and tanks with full
coverage.
Identify a new improved black coating to coat
pyroelectric detectors.
Be on aluminum substrates on space applications
due to their extremely light weight.
