POWER TOOL

SAFETY
POWER TOOL

A power tool is a tool that is actuated

by an additional power source and
mechanism other than the solely
manual labour.
Grinder is one of the most common hand
held power tools we use on board
...others includes Drilling and Cutting
Machine
ASSOCIATED HAZARDS

Associated hazards while using and

operating power tools :-

Physical Injury which may lead in lacerations,

amputations.

Electrical burns and shocks.

FACE INJURY

A 26 year old crew

was injured as the
disc of the angle
grinder he was using
shattered at high
speed. He sustained
deep wounds to his
right upper lip, nasal
base and left cheek.
HAND INJURY

A serious injury has

been reported where an
angle grinder disc break
has caused a significant
laceration to the left
arm.

The grinder in use was

without Guard.
FOR OUR PROTECTION
EQUIPMENT CHECKS

Portable grinding, cutting, and wire buffing wheels

create special safety problems because they may
throw off flying fragments.
Always follow the below safety procedures to
prevent injury:-

Guard must be in place;

Maintain proper alignment with the wheel;
Do not exceed the strength of the
fastenings.
GRINDER SAFETY

Abrasive wheel grinders must be

properly guarded
HIGH SPEED ALWAYS DANGEROUS..
Grinding wheel of portable hand held grinders
rotate at a very high RPM; approximately around
5000 to 8000. One potential source of serious
injury in grinding comes from an oversight that is
operating the wheel in an over-speed condition.

If a wheel that is run far enough in excess of its

rated maximum speed may shatter within
minutes of operation and injure the operating
person or persons standing nearby.
RING TEST
All abrasive wheels shall be closely inspected prior putting it in
use. Damaged or cracked wheel shall be discarded and not
used .
Standard ring-test may be done before
mounting to ensure that they are free from
cracks and defects.
How to do the test - Tap the flat side of the
wheel with a light non-metallic implement,
such as the handle of a screw driver and listen
to the sound. A sound and undamaged wheel
will give a clear tone. If cracked, there will be a
dead sound and not a clear ring and the wheel
shall not be used.
GRINDER SAFETY
The distance between the wheel On floor and
periphery and the adjustable bench mounted
tongue or the end of the peripheral grinders, shall be
member at the top shall never provided with work
exceed 6 mm. rests which are
rigidly supported
Tongue and readily
Guard
adjustable. Such
6 mm work rests shall be
kept at a distance
3 mm not to exceed 3
mm from the
Work Rest surface of the
wheel.
ELECTRICAL HAZARDS
Among the most serious hazards while using
portable electric tools are electrical burns and
shocks.

Electrical shocks may lead to injuries such as

heart failure and burns.
An electric shock also can cause the user to fall
off a ladder or other elevated work surface and
be injured due to the fall.
ALWAYS REMEMBER

Before START
you must know
how to STOP
in emergency
situations
ELECTRIC TOOLS
Safety goggles and gloves must be worn to protect
against hazards that may be encountered while using
hand tools.
Workplace floors shall be kept as clean and dry as
possible to prevent accidental slips.
Power tools must be fitted with guards and safety
switches; they are extremely dangerous when used
without these.
Operate electric tools within their design limitations.
UNSAFE PRACTICE
The use of electric
cords for hoisting or
lowering tools shall
never be done.

Cord is pulled
away from
plug due to
misuse
REGULAR SAFETY INSPECTIONS
Regular safety inspections are a
part of your job...

1.
Electrical equipment should be
checked each time before use for
defects.

2.
Remove all damaged portable
electric tools from use and tag
them: "Do Not Use.
Is this a problem?
Safety features of electric power Tools
All hand held electrical power tool shall be
provided with three Pin electrical connection ( Live
, Neutral and Ground), where body of the power
tool is grounded as safety precaution.
Some power tools are double insulated, where
tools are with two pins ( Live and Neutral) and
body of the tool is made of Plastic. In such case
double insulation symbol will be embedded on
the body of the tool.
Portable Residual Current Device( PRCD)

For additional safety,

we are supplying
PRCD to our ships
and it is to be used
whenever using the
electric power tools.
WHO CAN OPERATE POWER TOOLS?

Only trained and

authorised personnel
may operate power
tools
Pneumatic
Tools
PNEUMATIC TOOLS
Pneumatic tools are powered by compressed air
and include
Chippers
Drills
Hammers
The main danger is getting hit by one of the tool's
attachments or by some kind of fastener the
worker is using with the tool.
Eye protection is required for crew working with
pneumatic tools
PNEUMATIC TOOLS

Air hose
Hose and hose connections used for
pneumatic equipment shall be designed
for the pressure and service to which
they are subjected.
Safe Working Procedures for Pneumatic Tools

1. Before making or breaking any air connection,

always turn off the air supply. Use the valve to
turn off the air - never kink the hose as a
shortcut kinking the hose may damage or even
rupture the air hose.
2. Protect the air hose from damage. Move it out
of the way of vehicles so that it isn't run over.
Also, be sure not to drag hoses around sharp
corners.
3. Be sure to use the proper size air hose and
fittings to keep air pressure at a maximum
throughout the entire line.
