WHAT IS PLAY

Play is
multifaceted

playing, they usually
appear to be fully
engaged and focus on
their activity
PLAY IS MEANINGFUL

Young childrens imaginative play


has roots in the context of their life
experience.
The pretend play of children is
meaningful in that it has
connections to their own experience
PLAY IS SYMBOLIC

Children at play actively do


things that represent their
images of the world.
They spend a minimum
amount of time and energy
planning and negotiating
what and how to play
They devote a maximum
amount of time immersed

EXPLORATION AND PLAY

Exploration is an attempt to find out


about new experiences
Play is an attempt to find out what
players can do with their new
experiences.
Young childrens exploratory behavior
precedes play, and their manipulation of
concrete objects may help the transition
between exploration and play.

Play formats includes solitary or social


play with objects and others.
Socio-dramatic play is particularly
powerful form in which children use
both imagery and communication about
their imagery in seamless ways.

THERAPY

Art Therapy may be conducted as part of


a group process or as individual
counseling.
Clients do not need to have artistic skills
nor creative background to participate.
The emphasis is on the process of self-
discovery, self-expression, personal
development and integration.
Artwork may be spontaneously created
or may be directed by the suggestions of
the therapist.
