was a Jew, as were his twelve disciples. Christianity is based mainly around the
life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and is monotheistic. Christians believe
in the Bible being the word of God, and although some choose to take it more
literally than others, it is generally considered to be inspired by the Holy Spirit.

Das Oktoberfest dates from 1810. In 2010 the event celebrated its 200th birthday, but that year
marked only the 177th Oktoberfest, what with wars, epidemics and such. The original Fest was
the celebration of a Bavarian royal wedding. Princess Teresa (Therese) of Bavaria (1792-1854)
had married crown prince Ludwig I (later king of Bavaria) on the evening of October 12, 1810. The
next day, the city began celebrating the wedding with various activities, including concerts, parties,
balls, and even a horse race on the 17th. It all went so well that the Bavarian royal family decided
to hold another race a year later, beginning the Oktoberfest tradition.
Oktoberfest now attracts from five to six million visitors every year, many of them from outside
Germany. Although it is called Oktoberfest, the 16-day event always begins in September and
ends on the first Sunday in October (unless that Sunday falls on the 1st or 2nd, in which case the
festival continues until October 3, the German national holiday).
Smoked Pork Sausage with Hard-Cider Sauce
Preheat the oven to 325. In a bowl, cover the chipotle with hot water and let stand
until softened, 30 minutes. Bake the halved apples cut side down on a rimmed baking
sheet for 30 minutes, until tender. Let cool. Scoop the apple pulp into a food processor
and discard the skins. Stem, seed and chop the chipotle; add it to the food processor
and puree. Meanwhile, spread the bread in a pie plate and bake the pieces for about
10 minutes, until golden. In a saucepan, boil the hard cider with the vinegar, sugar and
apple puree. Simmer, stirring, until reduced to 3/4 cup, 10 minutes. Remove from the
heat and season with salt. Light a grill. Grill the sausages over moderate heat, turning,
until lightly charred on both sides and cooked through, 12 minutes. Transfer to a plate
and tent with foil. In a skillet, heat the oil until shimmering. Add the broccoli and season
with salt. Cover and cook until browned, 2 minutes. Stir in the mustard, caraway, cider
sauce and 1/2 cup of water and bring to a boil. Remove from the heat, stir in the butter
and season with salt. Serve the sausages with the broccoli and sauce, garnishing with
the bread crumbs and apple matchsticks.
PLACES TO GO & THINGS TO

Rgen Cliffs : The Rgen Cliffs are located in the Jasmund National Park in the northeast of Rgen
island. Facing constant erosion the chalk cliffs tower high above the Baltic Sea. The 118 meter (387 feet)
high Knigsstuhl (kings chair) is the most majestic part of the cliffs. The undisturbed forests behind the
cliffs are also part of the national park.

Romantic Rhine: The Romantic Rhine is the most famous section of the Rhine, running between from
Koblenz to Bingen. The river Rhine carves its way here through steep vineyard-covered hills topped with
countless castles and ruins. The river has been an important trade route into central Europe since ancient
times and a string of small towns has grown up along the banks. Constrained in size, many of these old
towns retain a historic feel today.

Frauenkirche: Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) is a Lutheran church that was completely destroyed
during WWII. The church reconstructed using original plans from the 1720s and reopened in 2005. The
city of Coventry, which was raided by the Luftwaffe donated the golden cross for the dome of the church.
