The document summarizes a redesign of packaging for mini Nilla wafers. [1] The original packaging used only 66% of the available space, leaving 33% as empty air space. [2] The redesigned packaging maintains the same surface area for shelf presence but reduces the width to minimize empty space. [3] The new design uses 98.25% of the available space, reducing air space to only 1.75% and saving on material costs while being better for the environment.

Original Packaging Volume of product = 1285.2 centimeters cubed
Volume of package= 1927.8 centimeters cubed
Only 66% of space being used
Volume of air space= 642.6 centimeters cubed
33% of the package is air space
Surface area of Package= 2681.24 centimeters squared
Design Process We knew the volume of the new packaging had to be greater than the volume of the product (1285.2 cm cubed), and since we wanted to maintain the same area for the front face of the box, so that the package retained its shelf presence, we decided to change the width.
V=(l)(w)(h) X= width of box
1285.2=(15.3)(X)(22.5) 1285.2=(344.25)(X)
1285.2/344.25=344.25/344.25X 3.733333=X
Then we rounded up to 3.8 cm for a bit of wiggle room.
Why The Change? Using less material creates less pollution and lowers the cost of production. New Packaging Volume of product= 1285.2 centimeters cubed
Volume of package= 1308.15 centimeters cubed
98.25% of space is being used
Volume of air space= 22.95 centimeters cubed
Only 1.75% of the package is air space
Surface area of package= 2532.19 centimeters squared
Benefits of the New Packaging Easy to stack, store, or ship
