SICKLE CELL DISEASE

WHAT IS SICKLE CELL DISEASE?
is a group of inherited red blood cell disorders. Healthy red
blood cells are round, and they move through small blood
vessels to carry oxygen to all parts of the body.
the red blood cells become hard and sticky and look like a C-
shaped farm tool called a sickle.
It can cause a shortage of red blood cells. They can also
cause a clog in your blood vessels because your vessels our
getting smaller.
TYPES OF SCD

HbSS- People who have this form of SCD inherit two sickle cell
genes (S), one from each parent.
HbSC-People who have this form of SCD inherit a sickle cell gene
(S) from one parent and from the other parent a gene for an
abnormal hemoglobin called C.
HbS beta thalassemia-People who have this form of SCD inherit
one sickle cell gene (S) from one parent and one gene for beta
thalassemia, another type of anemia, from the other parent
CAUSE OF SCD

It can be pass through genetics from family


It is inherited when a child receives two sickle cell genes
one from each parent.
HOW YOU CAN FIND THAT YOU HAVE SCD

Blood test
Sometimes it is found at birth of a newborn child at the
hospital
You should call the local cell organization if one of your family
members have it.
SYMPTOMS OF SCD

Swelling in hands and feet are usually the first symptoms


When the sickle cells travel through the cells it can cause
pain the that area. If you have pain you should go to the
Emergency room.
TREATMENT

Washing your hands is one of the best ways to help prevent


getting an infection
Antibiotic medicines and sometimes blood transfusions
